Independence Homes supported living flats are suppose to be your flat where you feel at home, however there are many reasons on how the staff make you feel uncomfortable and unhappy enough to not feel like this is your home, especially for younger people and autistic people.
Staff are literally always demanding and judgemental on how our flats look with just the smallest of mess and demanding us to clean when it’s only happy with them and especially if we are about to go out. They also accuse us of being rude when we politely say that we will do it later or not now. They don’t always nock or ring the doorbell, but just let themselves in, and won't leave even if you ask politely.
Literally any conversation, discussion, or situation we have, either important or not, they always make out that your in the wrong, even if your clearly explaining that your not in anyway or explaining to management your side of the situation, even if the situation will upset you or anyone else involved in anyway.
For example; recently one of the team supervisor decided to discuss a personal situation infant of me and someone else who isn’t involved and even though I quickly walked away without saying anything, it really upset me and made me uncomfortable, especially as I calmly explained the situation to higher-up managers, team leaders and even the person directly that it wasn't me that started the conversation but instead was the staff, but still being insulted that it's me that now start conversations about personal matters infant of others, which I wouldn’t even dream on doing at all. It’s literally like they have no understanding that we also have feelings.
Managers and team supervisors will only suddenly decide to talk to you nicely or to be supportive with issues only after you discuss your issue to someone more higher up.
I have noticed this sort of issue happen to many others (including me), where the staff are not supportive, and maybe even horrible, but then as soon as someone else gets involved, they'll be suddenly nice and supportive towards you. This is because staff/management who work in the block of flats literally don’t want to take any issues (no matter how important it is) seriously unless someone else related to you (like a parent) or to the company's head office or a local authority that have the right to discuss the person’s rights and wellbeing needs with your permission, like Independent advocacy; Advocacy for All gets involved.
When phoning head office in regards to any incident with staff, manager, or client, they will literally just tell you to talk to the management of the block of flats, even if you explain that they haven’t or won’t do anything. If however, you do manage to speak to someone that is nicer enough to listen to your issue, and no matter how well you explain the issue, there is a very slim chance that nothing will happen as it just gets forwarded to management of the building.
Anything important that you ask to get fixed, or replaced that’s covered by the landlord, will literally take weeks or may be up to a month to get fixed or replaced, especially if the management remove the issue from the system, which may happen if staff somehow get the impression that it has got fixed when it hasn’t.
Also, you will get told off by management if you give permission to a maintenance team member, parent or even someone else to put something up (big or small) without management knowing.
If anything gets stolen or broken by anyone else, even by staff, and even if you have enough good evidence on who it was, still nothing will happen.
These and similar incidents have happen to others living in the building as well.
Besides these issues with not treating us like an adult, the personal care side I can’t talk about, but however these points I wrote above is strongly advisable to think about or/and to be taken into huge consideration if you or someone related that your assisting are planning on moving....
