We went to William H Brown to purchase our first home and they were also our brokers. There were a few issues along the way but our broker Serina was quick at dealing with the issues and very understanding. She was always around to help us sort everything out. Appallingly rude and unhelpful. I bought a new build flat through them and my flat was uninhabitable after completion. Though that issue was not their fault, they were not interested in being helpful or supportive - considering I was being forced to couchsurf due to not being able to move in. They basically said it's not our problem talk, to your solicitor, and would not give any contact details of the builder. No morality.

Just a tip to people viewing rental properties through Sowerby's: Don't. I viewed a property on a Saturday morning, and called them to apply for tenancy an hour later. I was told I'd have to wait to be called by one of their team on Monday. Monday rolls around and I miss the call (a voicemail was left asking if I wanted to proceed with an application) in the morning so call them back in the afternoon. The person I spoke to was confused as to whether the property was already let or it was myself that was going to be letting the property. She said she would call me back right away after finding out more information from a colleague. She didn't. The next morning I receive a call telling me that the property was already let over the weekend due to the landlord also having the property managed under another letting agent. The moral of this story is don't bother with Sowerby's, the reason I did not get a chance to live in the property I wanted was that they do not work over the weekend and other letting agents do.

My partner and I have recently exchanged on a home and are due to move in next week. Overall we can't fault the service Ollie provided us - from our initial viewing to offer and throughout the conveyancing he always knew exactly what was going on and kept us updated via phone and email. If Ollie was unavailable due to viewings, James was up to date and knew what was going on too. As a result our purchase has been relatively pain free! I would definitely recommend Barton & Co without hesitation and I'm sure if we ever sell our home in the future we will use them

Appreciate this review comes amongst a lot of 5 star reviews but two things: firstly, we would have loved to have the experiences everyone else seems to have had and secondly, our experience completely legit. Initially Barton and Co were very personable, very keen to ingratiate themselves, presenting themselves as a tight-knit, homespun antidote to the more cavalier lettings agents that operate in the local area. However, once we were in the communication dried up once and we rarely received acknowledgement of our emails. Though they did replace our oven quickly when we moved in (they hadn't checked it worked before) we spent the rest of our tenancy with a radiator hanging off the wall at a 45 degree angle, amongst other issues. We were misled as to the nature of our landlords as despite being informed they wanted a professional couple as long-term tenants to look after their property, we were asked to leave the property after a year to vacate for a student let. We were informed we had the opportunity to extend our contract but this was unequivocally not the case, as our emails were never acknowledged and we were never advised of an alternative course of action. I'm sure it was incompetence rather than malice, but they would not accept any culpability nor would they meet personally to discuss. I've worked in both property maintenance and communications so I found their behaviour galling. Furthermore, this move derailed our efforts to save for a mortgage deposit as we were forced to waste it on another rental deposit. Appreciate the above might be a bonus for many buy-to-let landlords in terms of misleading and effectively dispatching tenants when a chance to increase their profits presents itself. But should the wind change in favour of legislation which actually protects tenants from the debilitating effects of cowboy landlords, outfits like these will be found out.
