A quiet, somewhat bereft medieval church standing on a small rise above the River Medway. No longer in regular use, a wealth of 13th, 14th and later architectural styles remain visible, layered over one another. The Piscina for the washing of sacramental vessels remains in its original position, once (as in all such chapels) to the right of the altar, even though the Eastern wall and newer altar has been rebuilt in the c 15th century some distance further East. A Norman font remains in the NW corner, another seemingly later font stands near the entrance in the Southern wall. There is a rectangular bell tower in the Western end. I was fascinated by the windows of various ages patched, changed, still visible as a present record of centuries gone. This is a humble church, larger than Dode, Paddlesworth and the once St Lawrence's Chantry chapel in Upper Halling but similar in size and placing to neighbouring Wouldham's church - not yet visited. St Mary's at (old) Burham is looked after by a preservation charity and is only rarely opened. All thanks to them for ensuring such gems are prevented from ruin!... Read more
