This nursing home is an absolute disgrace. The smell hits you when you arrive and the rooms are absolutely filthy and poorly maintained. There is a horrible atmosphere. The level of 'care' provided is quite simply appalling. The majority of the staff are useless, uncaring, unfriendly and rude to both residents and visitors. The food is disgusting and nothing like the advertised menus. It is far too big; more attention is clearly paid to profits than the quality of care that SHOULD be provided. Avoid at all costs, I feel sorry for the poor people stuck there. JUNE 2011: In response to the comments I can assure you we did complain and nothing was done about it, in fact the only response to my concerns was rude staff talking to me like a bit of dirt whilst a manager just stood there, and then nothing actually being done. The place most DEFINATELY smells, and this is made worse by the smell of air freshener as an alternative to cleaning! The room was a disgrace and I found myself tidying it every time I visited as nobody else had. Am I to presume that it is acceptable for a room to have dirty underwear/nightwear just thrown on the floor, to be littered in dirty cups/glasses, for drinking water to be left for days on end and the reminants of the evening befores meal to be still there there next morning? The bathroom and commode was covered in stains and I don't think I need to explain what they were. The toilet had not been properly cleaned from the last resident in fact I doubt the bathroom had been at all. There were marks all up the walls, the radiator was broken, as was the light. I do actually have the photos to prove this. I'm not sure exactly how you can say a place is no too large when people are stuck at the end of huge corridors for hours on end because a) the staff don't bother (I know this for a fact as I tested how long personally) and b) the place is so huge they are unable to find their way to public rooms alone. The staff talk over residents and accuse them of lying; I caught them out on this on numerous occasions. I even had a situation whereby we arrived to find blood all over the place - nothing had been done. Dire, dire care. I'm not sure what catering you would like me to gauge the sights that I saw on but quite frankly as an example I do not consider a crispy pancake with a slice of cheap cheese melted over it a proper meal. I'm afraid I've no interest in discussing the matter further with anyone at Elizabeth Finn; you didn't care at the time, nobody responded to my original complaint and I'm damn sure you won't do anything now that the money has been banked. I certainly do not want a credit for further respite as I will never step foot in this dreadful place again.... Read more

I too am astonished by the review of 24th April 2011. My Mother has been a resident of Hampden House for more than 4 years and I disagree totally with every comment made. 1) There is no smell when you arrive at Hampden - indeed this was one of the reasons we were attracted to the home in the first place. In all the time my Mother has been there I have never once encountered any smell which 'hits you' - unlike many other establishments I have visited. 2) My Mother's room is kept spotlessly clean as are all the public rooms, and the accommodation will be even better when the current refurbishment is completed. 3) The level of care is excellent and to describe the staff as useless, uncaring, unfriendly and rude is simply untrue. 4) The food is definitely not disgusting - I have eaten there myself on several occasions and the menus are interesting and varied. Indeed the residents are consulted regularly on their likes and dislikes. 5) It is not too big - another reason why we chose it. It is not overwhelming like some of the larger homes and the rooms are purpose built as opposed to some homes where the best rooms may be large but others are quite small with very little outlook. In all, I could not disagree more with the comments made in the 24th April review. I can only assume the anonymous reviewer has some sort of grudge against HH and is following a personal agenda. I consulted my Mother about this review and she is very much in agreement with what I have written. She considers Hampden House to be her very comfortable home. Gill R... Read more
