I was deeply unhappy with the service from this agency in 2016. I sold my house with Somervilles and also bought through them so I saw both sides of the company. The sale was managed reasonably well, though it took longer than I was initially led to believe and failed to reach the asking price. The real problem was the purchase of a house that had been on the market quite some time. It was almost winter when I saw it but the brochure showed it in summer. I viewed the property, liked it and made an appointment to view it with my husband the following week. A friend advised me to make an offer to secure the house so I contacted the agency to say I wanted to be sure no one else viewed it until my husband could do so, a few days later. I was assured there was no likelihood of this, the property had been on the market a long time and there was no recent interest. Reassured, I did not put in an offer, but waited for my husband to arrive from abroad. He liked the house and we rang immediately with our offer only to be told someone had seen the house over the weekend and made an offer. No one had bothered to contact me to say someone was interested. It was less than a week since I had first seen the house that had had no interest for many months and now suddenly there were two interested parties! I think it is wrong that estate agents are not obliged to give details of other genuinely interested parties in a case like this. I have no evidence that another buyer existed - I have to take the agents' word. Equally, the agent is not empowered to give details of any other interested party to verify these facts. So we are both vulnerable - the client for feeling they are somehow being deceived and the agency for appearing to be acting more in the interests of the seller. I felt from that moment that Somervilles was working very hard for the seller to secure the best price - considerably harder than they had worked when they sold mine. If you are selling, maybe you find this behaviour is to your advantage so use them, by all means. But if you are buying - be careful to ensure your interests are respected. We were genuine buyers and wanted the house so we paid the price the owner wanted - which we knew was about £7K more than it was worth. Had the agency let me know another person had become interested that weekend I could have negotiated a 'no further viewings' agreement with an accepted offer. We were cash buyers ready to move at once. This felt like gamesmanship, with one buyer being played off against another. Left a very nasty taste.... Read more

Somerville's is the first estate agent I have ever been impressed with-they break the mould! Richard got my House on the market within two days of valuing the property and within a week it was sold for a price I was happy with. From start to finish they were efficient, our buyers also commented to us how impressed they where with Richard, Annie and Clare and how good they were to deal with. If you are looking to sell your house or even buy a property then look no further than Somervilles. This team are highly professional but with that personal touch. Being an independant agent they are willing to go that extra mile to make sure that your house will sell or to find you the right property. I had my house on with a chain Estate Agent for well over 12 months and only had a handful of viewings and very little feedback from them. I decided to switch to Somervilles as not only are they local but it is in their interest to ensure that they sell your property. After meeting with Richard and Annie I felt more at ease about my house sale and the prospect of finding a buyer as they were more attentive and constantly gave feedback. Within a few weeks of being with them I had more viewings for my property than the total with the other agent. After each viewing I recieved all relevant feedback from them, usually within 24 hours. Once I had a buyer from my property I was always kept up to date with how things were moving and given advice on how I should proceed. I even went with their recommended solicitors and financial advisor who also made my move feel a lot easier, Somervilles also kept in contact with them with regards to how the sale was proceeding so that my buyer and myself were kept informed. In summary this is an excellent 5* team who will do everything within their power to ensure that your property will sell as well as ensure that you are kept at ease with the whole process throughout the entire process. I cannot recommend them highly enough and if I ever need to move again (which wont be anytime soon) I will be going back to them.... Read more
