5 Most Haunted Homes

Looking for your dream home - or perhaps a few sleepless nights?

Britain’s property market has more than its fair share of history, and in some cases… that history refuses to move out. From ghostly nuns to monsterous monks, these are the 5 most haunted homes in Britain that might just make your viewing schedule a little more spirited.

The 5 Most Haunted Homes in Britain

1. Blickling Hall, Norfolk

Anne Boleyn’s childhood home is beautiful by day, but come the anniversary of her execution, it’s another story. Each year on 19 May, the date of her execution, Anne’s ghost is said to return home. Locals say her headless ghost arrives in a spectral coach, horses snorting fire as they thunder up the drive.

Witnesses describe her carrying her severed head as the coach vanishes into the night. The haunting serves as a tragic echo of her downfall — from Tudor queen to one of the Tower of London’s most famous victims.

Investment potential: A royal pedigree and guaranteed annual visitation — from the afterlife.

2. Raynham Hall, Norfolk

You might have heard of this one! The famous photo of the “Brown Lady” gliding down the staircase was snapped here in 1936. Raynham Hall remains a stately beauty, but it’s the resident spectre of Lady Dorothy Walpole that’s made it legendary.

Dorothy, sister of Britain’s first Prime Minister Robert Walpole, was rumoured to have been locked away by her husband for alleged infidelity. After her death in 1726, guests began reporting sightings of her ghost, glowing with a faint bronze light, drifting elegantly down the main staircase — still dressed in her brown brocade gown.

Estate agent’s note: Charming period features, original staircases, and one photogenic ghost.

3. Ham House, Richmond

Elegant, grand and, according to rumour, very much occupied by its 17th-century owners. The National Trust acknowledges its supernatural side, with staff reporting cold spots, footsteps, and the smell of roses with no flowers in sight.

The formidable Duchess Elizabeth Murray, who lived through the turbulence of the English Civil War, is said to linger still — protective of her opulent legacy. Staff have heard her heels clicking across the marble floors and caught glimpses of her reflection in old mirrors. Ever the hostess, she seems determined to ensure her house remains exactly as she left it.

Fun fact: The Duchess of Lauderdale’s ghost is said to be as formidable as she was in life — so maybe don’t rearrange the furniture.

4. Borley Rectory, Essex

Once dubbed the most haunted house in England, Borley Rectory was a Gothic masterpiece of creaks, whispers and mysterious writing on the walls. Built in 1862, it was said to be haunted by a sorrowful nun and a mischievous poltergeist with a flair for drama. The rectory burned down in 1939 - but locals still swear the ghosts stuck around.

The most famous spirit, the Borley Nun, is said to be a heartbroken sister from a nearby convent who fell in love with a monk. Legend claims they planned to elope — but were caught, and she was entombed alive within the convent walls. Her lonely figure, drifting through the gardens and cloisters, became one of Britain’s most enduring ghost stories.

Viewing tip: Bring a torch, and perhaps an exorcist.

5. 30 East Drive, Pontefract

Don’t let the postcode fool you - this semi-detached in West Yorkshire is home to the infamous Black Monk Poltergeist. In the 1960s, the Pritchard family endured a torrent of paranormal chaos: flying furniture, levitating beds, and one seriously bad-tempered spirit.

Rental advice: Energy levels in the property are... unusually high.

Whether you’re a believer or a sceptic, there’s no denying these homes add a new meaning to “period property”. At GetAgent, we can’t promise your next home will come with ghosts — but we can help you find the right local estate agent to make sure you don’t get haunted by buyer’s remorse.
