I rented a property with direct properties for the past 12 months and it was the worst experience i’ve ever had with a lettings agency. They first said the property would be fully cleaned when we moved in, there was faeces on the wall, the plug sockets were smashed in, the alarm had been ripped off the wall and the past tenants still had things left in the property. We then had Leeds City council round to do an inspection and they filed a report as they found one of the bedrooms uninhabitable (we were still charged rent for this room even though it was deemed uninhabitable) due to the stairs leading up to it being unsafe and the glass doors in the house were not in line with building regulations. There was also no carbon monoxide alarm in the house for the first 6 months which is illegal. We complained but they did nothing, constantly said put it in an email whenever we’d call but then when we’d email they would simply ignore it. After one of the worst living situations we’d ever experienced, we were thankful to just be moving out and getting our deposit back. They refused to tell us what protection agency our deposit was held with which by law should be given to tenants within the first 30 days of moving in. This meant that raising a dispute was very difficult when they point blank refused to return our deposit, even though the house had been left in a better state than when we’d moved in. They would not take our calls, they would just say that the person in charge of deposits wasn’t available and to call back later but they would say this every time we called. We would visit in person and they would turn us away saying the same thing and also would just ignore emails. It took 4 months, about 50 emails and phone calls and multiple visits in person before we finally managed to wear them down enough to return our deposit but even then they tried to charge us cleaning fees regardless of the fact we left it spotless. It was an extremely difficult ordeal and I assume they usually count on people giving up on getting their deposit back as they are so difficult to deal with. I would not recommend renting with this lettings agency to anyone and would advise any person to think twice before signing any contracts with them.

Very aggressive and uncooperative agency - argued about giving deposit back despite no damage to property, staff were horrible to work with and intimidating

Edit: not sure where these 1 star reviews are from. I know they've had some racist attacks recently so hopefully it's nothing to do with that :(

Would give 0 stars if I could!!! . They cheated us by without giving the deposit. We filed legal steps towards Direct Properties. Renters beware - you WILL lose your deposit
Depositors: Please raise the complaints in Property ombudsman with proper evidences.

Provide cheap flat rents but service is unacceptable. does quick fix sealant on holes that leave a crater dried up plaster. Never came back to leaking issue now charges us a total of 450 pounds from our deposit. Good thing i recorded a video on how we received the flat. it was so dirty that our new neighbour helped us clear up the boxes of junk on the front door.
I woudnt even post it here coz its ridiculously embarassing.

Honestly, where do I start. Since the age of man there has been a need for accommodation. We started in caves and slowly progressed through the ages until we come to the homes we know today. But in some rare cases, we have not evolved. And the caves we first inhabited remain. Unfortunately in this case, direct property’s are the masters. Swallows are there game and scammers are their name.

Would give 0 stars if I could!!! Renters beware - you WILL lose your deposit. The bin is always full so stinks, even from your bedroom - do NOT open your window!
Also the fire alarms go off all the time - SORT IT OUT DIRECT PROPERTIES.

Avoid at all cost. Its a scam company. Once you stop the tenancy, they ignore your calls and emails and they will never return you the security deposit
