So FOX LETTINGS took our deposit. They then sat on our paperwork for over a week and a half before sending for referencing. We were told them that the landlord didn’t want us as we were too risky. We offered 6 months in advance and we’re still told no. We have since continually been receiving emails relating to our referencing being approved, are we looking forward to moving in and would we like insurance Apparently Fox hadn’t told the referencing agency. Apparently Martin has a bad reputation for this So avoid. They have broken our dreams. We had bought stuff for the property with no idea they could take it off us, and advertise for someone else... My business was in need of finding a commercial premises as this was vital in obtaining a new business contract, this was proving difficult due to the fact the Covid had closed a lot of companies, however, Martin at Fox, found us a property sent everything over to us and even managed to negotiate a better rate per month with the landlord due to the unpredictable environment we are living in. I can't tell you how relieved we were to have had such a swift and stress free process and can only thank you Martin and your team for your effort and for the dedication you have for the services you provide. We got in contact with Fox Sales and Lettings for a property advertised. My partner and I wanted to put an application in right away. I spoke with Martin over the phone and he tried to increase the asking price even before speaking to the landlord, then he said we would be in touch the next day. Nobody answered for the next 3 days. We also met Martin in person at the viewing and we stated clearly we would like to go forward with the application to which he said they would be in touch at the end of the day after trying again to push the price. Nobody called and the property was let later that evening. Probably the best outcome instead of having to deal with them further down the road.... Read more

I lived in Bishop's Stortford for 2 years and half, I always paid my rent on time and Fox's manager Martin Tyler told me that I was the perfect tenant. But when I left the apartment I had to wait more than 2 months for my deposit, while the contract stated "return the deposit within 30 days". Martin Tyler was not paying it and he was not answering my emails. I had to write him every day and insist. He aswered me only when I told him that I was about to call the police and I got my money after a few days. Also, he took 30 pounds from my deposit for the VAT, but it was not mentioned in the contract. My reply to what Martin Tyler answered me here: 1) I know that I am not the only one who had to wait for months before getting the deposit back. I know other people who had the same problem with you. 2) I did not abandon my furniture, because both me and you spoke to the new tenants and they said since the beginning that they wanted to buy everithing. I also helped you every day to mediate with them, explaining terms and conditions. I left the house the 11th of November 2019 and they moved in the 22th of November 2019, they paid straight away, I saw their receipts. Anyway, my deposit was not linked to theirs. 3) Concerning the VAT, I never received the receipt you are talking about.... Read more

BE WARNED Martin(owner) is a purely money driven salesmen with no integrity. Explanation... I was looking to rent an apartment in the Bishops Stortford area, found the perfect place and noticed it was listed with several other agents, we saw that Fox received no bad reviews so decided to contact them to set up a viewing. First problem was that no one from their office showed up on time for our viewing and i had to call to remind them to come to the property we were waiting at. Martin showed up within 15 minutes, he was pleasant enough, although very 'salesman' like. Martin told us he would wave the admin fees and referencing fees and only charge us a reservation fee of £500 which would go towards the deposit. Later that day we called him to agree to take the apartment off the market and paid the £500 to take the property off the market In the week before we were due to move in we had not heard anything from martin or fox and noticed the property was still being listed by other agencies. I called and asked if our references had stalled, he told me it was all going fine, references had passed he was just waiting on some final information from the landlord. A few more days passed still no word on what was going to happen, or a contract for us to sign. Again I called and asked if we are still on track to move in that weekend. It was only then that Martin explained that it seemed as though the landlord had a change of heart and pulled out of the deal without explanation. He explained that the landlord asked for our £500 upfront and Martin told him no as he wanted to keep our money safe, so the landlord came in later that day and took the keys off martin as he wanted to look at the apartment. I asked if there was anyway to salvage the situation, he said it doesn't seem so, so I asked for my £500 back as the let had fell through. Martin then told me he would not be giving the full amount back only 300 of it as the rest was payment for referencing fees. I reminded him that he told us originally and in writing he was waving those fees, but claimed that was only on the basis that the let went through and as it didnt he wanted some payment for his work. I questioned this to which he said he isn't doing this for free and if i have a problem i can contact property ombudsman or the landlord to reimburse me. P.S he repeatedly said how "he couldn't believe the landlord was doing this to us" despite him trying to take our money. I contacted the landlord, he confirmed he wanted the money early martin didnt give it to him so he took the keys, but also told me that he did tell martin that he was not going to let through him days before martin eventually came clean that the let was not going ahead. In defence of Martin, after speaking to the landlord he did seem sketchy and i dont blame him for not wanting to give him money. After this I looked up my rights on getting my money back. This is when i discovered that it was in fact illegal for Martin to keep our money. As the owner of an estate agency you would expect him to know this. I emailed martin reminding him of the law & asked for our money back, he ignored my emails. I had to resort to threats of small claims court & eventually made a breakthrough when speaking to his colleague, pleading with him to reason with martin that I will take it further if i have to but simple want our money back so we could move on from this ordeal. After this Martin promptly responded telling me he will refund all the money. No apology or explanation for his actions before. The nail in the coffin was that a week after this had been resolved martin contacted me to tell me the money had been returned and that he still can't believe what the landlord did and i shouldn't hesitate to use fox again. If in doubt about my claims read the sarcastic & arrogant reply below, which refuses to take blame, pretends not to know law that if the tenant is not responsible for a let falling through all fees must be returned to the tenant & lying about the events. I'll have posted email screen shots to prove this.... Read more
