The single WORST letting agents I have ever had the displeasure to come across. I moved from up country having no time to view the place and when I arrived they had rented me a completely different room. I never got the chance to view it and when I arrived the mattress was broken along with the bed and they had told me they wouldn't replace it because it's perfectly fine. So I replaced the mattress at my own cost just for the bed to do the same thing to my new mattress. Upon moving out they wouldn't agree to me leaving early even if I paid the rent in full for the month of my notice and then rang me to try to push me to move out sooner. And finally upon my leaving inspection they have proposed deductions for debris on the floor that I hoovered myself the day before I left the property. And paid for a new coat hook to be installed that was broken upon arrival The customer care team are awful I would advise ANY OTHER tenancy agents other than these. I have shared houses and rented for 10 years and have always been praised on the way in which I leave the property and have NEVER had any deductions. This letting agency hold a standard that is impossible to meet so you will almost definitely lose some or all of your deposit if anything is left out of place. Avoid avoid avoid... Read more

Update to response My child was a tennant through your agency, I was guarantor. The students had a large amount of their deposit withheld, for cleaning fees, even after the inspection said a light dusting was only required. This review is no different to the reviews others have left. This company is corrupt. My child rented a property whilst at uni, we cleaned the property, purchased new mop / bucket cleaning supplies etc. The house was spotless. When the letting agent checked the property they said it was cleaned to a high standard and maybe a light dust needed. I took before and after photos, the property was disgusting when my child moved in. After the students moved out, Townsend's withheld £200.00 of their deposit for 'cleaning fee'. Which is illegal under the 2019 Tenancy Act. I requested their after photos, proving their evidence of the standard of cleaning needed, which they didn't have and said new tenants were in the property. The property is a tiny 2 bedroom house, with mould. You should be ashamed of yourselves. I hope other students who rent from you are aware how you behave. And, as others who have left reviews, this seems normal practice with this company. We started proceedings with solicitors, the costs involved are very high, unfortunately.... Read more

My friends and I rented a student property from Townsend for the academic year 2021/22. We have been very disappointed with their treatment of us. Reported issues take weeks/months to be fixed, which would be understandable is they had a system that reflected problems in priority order but instead fix minor aesthetic issues while we were left with a broken washing machine for 4 weeks, a broken shower for 9 weeks and numerous other issues with key appliances. It was only after multiple phone calls and emails from multiple house members that our issues were logged let alone fixed. At the beginning of our tenancy we reported faults with the house from the previous tenants and we were told our oven was broken, a few days later someone came to clean the oven and we told the cleaner that it was broken so not to clean it. Townsend then sent the cleaning lady back after telling her that we had lied about the oven and that they had no idea why we thought it was broken. The staff don’t seem to note down problems or communicate with each other and then when we called again to follow up, they claim not to know anything about it. Perhaps this is genuine incompetence or more likely just unorganised staff who couldn’t care less. They are always very polite but this is no constellation as they manage to blame contractors or landlords for every issue that is brought up. There is no accountability for any problem. Other students have had similar issues to us but it seems to be justified each time by saying that this is simply the student experience. If this is the student experience we should be paying student discounted prices rather than £2500 a month. Another ongoing issue that we have faced with Townsend is them giving house keys to contractors without first telling us. On multiple occasions we have woken up to unknown men in our house and panicked before them telling us who they were and why they were in our kitchen. This was reported to Townsend who apologised and said it wouldn’t happen again. Despite our complaints on multiple occasions, strangers still let themselves in throughout the year. We also reported mould multiple times and were told to just clean it off the wall. Students are treated very poorly and aren’t taken seriously simply because we are students. Would not recommend this service to anyone hoping for a relaxed and comfortable tenancy.... Read more

I am very unimpressed by Townsends and would strongly recommend people avoid dealing with them if possible. I rented a property for almost a year and kept it in good condition. Repair work had to be carried out during my tenancy, which meant I was unable to use part of the property. I was cooperative throughout, made no fuss and no compensation was offered or received. When leaving the property, Townsends' agent came round to inspect the property. I asked if there were any issues that needed addressing in order to ensure I received my full deposit back. I was told there weren't any. However, after leaving the property, they raised issues specifically about things that I had asked about during the inspection. Because of this, they took weeks to return my deposit and this was after they made deductions for things that would normally be regarded as general wear and tear. Customer service was quite poor, Louise came off as condescending and had a poor temperament. After speaking with her on the phone, it just leaves a bad taste. Extremely accusatory and did not speak politely to tenant at all. Important to note, this does not apply for the other lady who initially picked up the line and seemed more understanding and polite, this applies to my experience with Louise. Edit: As requested, I will leave the details of the conversation here. The situation revolves around a broken window which I was accused of forcing open. The initial incident happened 3 months ago. During the phone call I had with them, I was trying to explain that the landlord had previously informed me that the window was supposed to be a fire exit window. This is important, because assuming it's a fire exit window, it should be able to fit a person through. I was also trying to explain that it was rusty and that it would make no sense for me to 'force' open the window, as there would be no purpose to that. Notably, the landlord also attempted to "fix" the hinges using a wrench that only further bent the hinges. During the call, I was trying to have a conversation with Louise about the situation in which I am getting charged £60 for the window fix. Naturally, as anyone would, I would like to know the details and provide my side. However, my main issue during the call, was that Louise seemed dismissive of my points, and disregarded my perspective. She also seemed in a rush to end the call and basically said the call was wasting her time. Furthermore, she repeatedly accused me of 'forcing the window open' to try and establish it was a fire exit. However, I did not force it open, and in actuality, I was using the fire exit as a point to say how the window should be able to be opened wide. Her attitude to end the conversation was made more apparent, when she said that whatever I said would make no difference and that she was "expecting the full payment within seven days". To emphasise, in my main review, my main issue was not "complaining about the charges", but my main issue was the condescending tone and accusatory way I was spoken to as a student and customer. I was incited to write this review due to the bad taste left in the aftermath of the conversation, and how I think a customer should not be spoken to in such a manner as to condescend them. This review would not have been made if I was spoken to politely and accommodatingly in an understanding manner as opposed to an accusatory one.... Read more

A decent letting agent during tenancy, but when I moved out they appeared to ignore their own check in report that documented original faults & problems with property caused before I moved in. They started an attempt to make deductions from my deposit for this, so I challenged them for details with ref to check in & check out reports, stating I was happy for it to go through legal system dispute process to get my deposit back in full. They subsequently backed down returning my deposit as a "goodwill gesture", not much goodwill about it as it was legally my money. If you use Townsend be extremely careful documenting condition at move in & be prepared to fight hard for your deposit returning at end of tenancy. When i first needed a property in falmouth townsends were really quick to sort me out. The house was pretty old meaning the wood windows were flakey/mouldy, the wood floor was stained and the ouse had a general delapidated feel too it. Also there was a small yard and deck. As time went on and we started to have inspections, no matter how well we cleaned the house townsends would never ever be happy with it. The house would probably look tidy if it wasn't already falling apart ? you cant hoover that away ? and aswell the fact that landlords expect you to do the gardening but don't want to provide you with anything. oh and one of the windows in the porch wouldn't close the whole two years we were there so theres rats in there now. other than that pretty sound... All my friends have had a horrible experience with Townsend and I thought we would be okay since during the year they had been good at responding to us and dealing with our issues in the house. They were also always commending us on how clean the house was during every inspection. However the real issue comes when you leave. When we first came to the house, it wasn't super clean but we had no issue with cleaning it ourselves. There was stains in the cupboard, rubbish left in the garden and the rooms were extremely dusty and window sills were mouldy and gross. But we decided to clean it ourselves as we did not think it was such a big deal. Yet when when we left, they felt it necessary to charge £75 to clean the house, for tiny crumbs on the work top, the same window sills we came into the house with and a streaky mirror by the cooker which was greasy when we first arrived. This agency makes their money by charging students and the end of the year for "cleaning" at the end of the year. Don't sign a contract with them because they are deceitful and sneaky and think they can get away with it because they are dealing with students.... Read more

Properties are on the expensive side, especially with the non refundable application fee, however, I have rented privately with far worse estate agents and landlords. Townsends are good in that they get any problems fixed within a reasonable time, and (for students) water/energy/WiFi bills are included in the rent, making life a little easier.... Read more

Got a great property to rent through Townsend, always such a quick response when jobs are needed doing on our place (freezer, boiler etc) Recently our current landlord decisioned to sell our property meaning we would have to leave. Luckily we had Roger from Townsend who took our case in such a professional and courteous manner; my partner is heavily pregnant (due in a few days of writing this) and he was extremely considerate regarding this. End result was that another landlord has purchased our property so can stay where we are for the future. I was unfortunate enough to have my tenancy transferred to this company when the previous agents i signed up with ceased trading and upon checking the reviews,i was quite concerned about how they run. I had no problems with Tidmans and they acted very professional and done what they were supposed to but unfortunately Townsends don't follow the same professionalism. House inspections were carried out in my previous home without my knowledge or any form of correspondence which violates the housing act of 1988. I had potential new tenants and a member of staff from Townsends turn up again with no prior warning or even a courtesy message as i was moving my items out of the property. They rob money off the deposit and use dodgy cleaning staff to fabricate extra hours for cleaning.I spent a solid day and a half cleaning the house to a very high standard and it was immaculate in comparison to when i first moved in. An honest and professional cleaner could have gone over any small areas i missed in approximately an hour or perhaps two at a push and not the six hours she claimed for.I caught the cleaner out with her lies and she then refused to take my calls until i rang Townsends who also agreed that six hours seemed very excessive but then provided her with the exact same story that she passed on to me word for word. If you are a potential new tenant for this lot then be very very careful because they will extract the urine and take what money they can from you. AVOID!... Read more

They tried to charge us £150 for 'rubbish removal and cleaning services' when we left, despite our house being completely spotless and far cleaner than when we moved in, and having no evidence for these charges. We also had constant problems with water leaking through the ceiling which the landlord who lived hundreds of miles away refused to fix until it began pouring through. My bedroom also had no fire door seperating it from the annexe kitchen behind. There was just two wooden doors with lumps of flammable polystyrene between them and a 4 inch gap between the door and frame. Despite constant complaints this was never fixed and I had to nail the loose door to the wall myself to stop it falling on me in my sleep. Communication with Townsend was very good and polite but no use trying to get anything fixed if you're a student, their landlords just fob you off despite making £2000+ off each house ( we paid 400-425 per room) Still one of the best student agencies and houses in Falmouth which says a lot...... We have been with Townsend as landlords for over 10 years and have always been happy with their services as a letting agent but when we came to sell recently we had our first experience of them as estate agents. I have to say that this has been a good experience from our first dealings with Anna through to the day to day handling of our sale by Dan; we have always been kept informed of what was happening and never had to chase them for answers. If we did raise queries they were answered promptly and efficiently and nothing was too much trouble even to the extent of taking final meter readings for us on the day we completed ! We rented with this agency after the agents we were with retired. Townsend first visit to our rented property went very well and we were thanked for looking after the house. We had 3 inspections during our time with them and the staff were always very friendly and seemed like they really appreciated us there. Really was well looked after from start to finish. Was made to feel very valued on every property inspection and was treated kindly and fairly when I needed some assistance with moving which required dipping into my deposit. Nothing was done underhandedly when they realised i wasnt able to return and complete the last part of the checkout . They took care of it all and made it all easy and calm for me. Of all the agencies I have dealt with through living nationwide because of work, these were not the biggest and not the most professional (on terms of corporate blandness), but they were by far the most approachable and kind. In my experience Townsends are a great company, I wish I had chosen them to look after my property right from the beginning. In the short time I have been with them they have carried out inspections and highlighted any works that need doing instead of just letting problems get worse and ultimately cost more to put right in the long run.(unlike another well known local company) The contractor’s that they use have been in my experience Excellent, responded quickly and work around my tenants needs. I found myself with Townsend due to them taking over my previous estate agents. I had a decent amount of viewings and got a sale secured in a reasonable time. This fell through at the last minute due to a problem with the house but Dan managed to find a cash buyer and eventually we got there. Dan was spot on in communication and did his best to get things moving. The only slight thing that disappointed me was the fact they wouldn’t honour the special offer I had agreed with the previous estate agent and conveniently the paperwork was lost. As a customer of Townsends, I can honestly say that they have always done me a good turn when it comes to my property, nothing has been an issue from day dot. When your in a property, then can be half decent and helpful. However, after giving notice to leave the property, they become rude (even swearing at me during one of many phone calls), they take huge amounts of money from your deposit unfairly (getting charged for carpet cleaning & flea treatment even though we didn't own a pet) & without knowledge (took many emails and phone calls to even get a list of deductions & we were not informed of these before they were carried out) & when we finally got what was left of our deposit, it was almost 5 weeks since we had vacated the property. 13 years of living in rented accommodation. Nine houses across the UK lived in within that time. - From all my experience, is the worst estate agent I have ever encountered. At the time (2010), they seemed to have a monopoly on the student housing in the Falmouth area. I can only hope this has ended, as the last thing I wish upon someone who has moved from their family home for the first time, is to get the impression that this is how customers should be treated. If I were to say the property had not been cleaned prior to moving in, that would be an understatement. The basement (of which we were shown around as being a usable space) was full of pizza boxes, litter and old gym equipment. When I phoned to ask why, I was told the basement was off limits. A lock was not installed on my bedroom door for seven months of tenancy, because they had forgotten to do it. We were not met at the property with the keys. We had to travel to the office that was (at the time) in the backstreets of Penryn. This was fine for us, but an acquaintance had to do the same trip with a broken leg as they would not make an exception. As a company, they are irresponsible, equivocative and their attention to detail is as poor as their customer service. Avoid if you can. (It's not often I'll review a company after seven years, but this really stuck with me and came up in conversation).... Read more
