I've learned that a letting agent is only as good as the landlord they work with. In my experience with Alexander Knight, that standard was very poor.
When we moved in to our property, we were greeted with grime, mess and awful 'repairs'. Throughout our tenancy we were subjected to even worse and anytime 'repairs' were made, they were shoddy and not fit for purpose, some even being dangerous. For example, plugs were left hanging off the walls for months. We were also expected to pay full rent the entire time these works were being carried out and we had to make huge efforts to ensure that we got a reduction.
As the management agent, we had expected Alexander Knight to act in our best interests, as well as the landlord's. However, we always were made to feel like our concerns were secondary and we were not taken seriously. Though Alexander Knight organised a meeting with the landlord (at our request), they did very little to speak on our behalf and bring both parties to an understanding, leaving us feeling helpless in a bad situation.
I would not wish the experience we had on anyone else. Whilst I notice that a majority of the reviews are positive and I cannot speak for the other properties, this property and the way it was handled was far from a positive experience and I don't think that should go unnoticed.
I had a frank conversation with Alexander Knight, saying that they should not be enabling bad landlords by working with them and I was told that they would not be letting this property again, unless it was refurbished. I sincerely hope that is the case.
I am leaving this review, because we have since learned that there are attempts being made to take money from our deposit and one of my housemates has been given a negative reference for her new property, leaving her relying on a guarantor. I felt that after the appalling experience we had and the nightmare we went through, that we would be allowed to move on with our lives without further negativity and we could just forget. This has not been the case and therefore I won't move on without sharing my experience with other, fellow renters.
