As first time buyers we were appalled by Barbers' service. We found a property namely "12 William Ball Drive" just over a week ago, rang them and confirmed our position and arranged a viewing. During this call we confirmed we were first time buyers and looking to use the Help to Buy scheme.
When we visited the property, the estate agent hinted that it may be available for under £400,000 due to them wanting to sell. We were further advised that no one else was looking at the property therefore there was no rush to put an offer in that weekend. After using the weekend to think about it, we visited the property twice more.
When we were two minutes away from visiting for the third time we were advised that they had sold the property but we could still put an offer in. This was after paying £350 for a surveyor to survey the building for us because by their own admission, the property needed work to finish it off. We were not advised that others were interested despite having booked a surveyor.
We were then advised by Imogen that they would need over £400,000 to secure the property. It later transpired they wanted £410,000 for the sale. We were then advised that no matter what offer we put in, it would be first come first serve against the other couple whom had placed an offer. This would have meant we would have applied for a mortgage with no guarantee of winning the house if and when the mortgage came through. We were then told an immediate £10,000 deposit would be needed to secure the property. This started feeling like a scam and alarm bells started to ring.
Once we had sent in our Agreement in Principle we were then notified that Help To Buy was not an option on this property. This meant that three visits, £350 to a surveyor and a lot of time had been completely wasted by their lies, deceit and above all, rudeness. Who would apply for a mortgage formally when you know the property is not reserved and another couple/family could take it from you. This would make your credit report look negative and would waste at least a month of your time.
We were absolutely gutted this was our first proper experience on the property market and we will never use Barbers or recommend them to anyone. We would love our £350 back for the surveyor but I doubt that will happen.

Managing Director called and questioned as to why we hadn't thought to reach out to him... surely if the situation gets that bad and you have to go to the MD to try and buy a property off of the estate agent, you are just not going to buy from them? He also blamed it on us for the fact that they did not advertise the Help to Buy scheme. It is true, they did not advertise it but if you are verbally told it is there on three visits you are going to trust them aren't you. No offer of refund for the £350 spent on a survey and he barely expressed an apology. Absolute joke.

Simply excellent service from a great team. We had to deal with an extremely difficult buyer, and Barbers were there with us all the way, offering advice, much assistance and reassurance. What a friendly, highly efficient and genuine company to employ. Would highly recommend!
