Extremely strange company. Throughout our tenancy we kept in contact with them over various issues (some being fixed other not), but the main issue came at check out. They tried to charge us a cleaning fee, but didn't do a check out report (even though they did a check in one), and when I asked for proof got a very strange response from them. Eventually they gave the money back after realising they had nothing to prove they needed the cleaner, it just seemed like they were trying their luck. If you go with them make sure you take plenty of photos at check out (or don't, it's not like they take them anyways).... Read more

Extremely let down. 0/5 Chris, the claimed landlord, was firstly very kind and keen to get me moved into the property. He had previously shown me another property but because I am NHS staff he had a property that was more fitting as it housed NHS workers only. He was very vague about the details I needed to provide during the viewing of the property and failed to mention any details of the deposit payments. I was then emailing with Justine Shaw for the application to move in and was asked “If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask.” but when I did ask they took days to get back to me and then failed to respond to the actual question. They then pressured me for the holding deposit of £150, so I sent this over to secure the property, but when I did, I received no response until 2 days later when they told me the property was no longer available! When I phoned for an explanation they were very defensive and rude and told me they had given the room to rent to someone else! There was no communication and they had no cares or concerns on how this may have affected me and had nothing but ridiculous excuses. Now seeing the previous 1/5 star reviews, I am concerned I won’t get my money back. The company is extremely untrustworthy and have a terrible attitude towards their clients, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to use this retail company.... Read more

If I could give 0 I would. Friendly to begin with but don't reply to any maintenance, had a leaking tap for a year, gave a house with no hot water for 3 weeks. All the walls suddenly starting peeling and the kitchen ceiling starting falling through. Agency didn't care but happily took an extra months worth of rent accidentally sent, took 6 months to get back. Honestly really run down and a dishonest company. Especially Justine. Also took full deposit because supposedly £1800 worth of cleaning needed doing regardless of us paying £200 for a professional to clean days before. BE AWARE. EDIT:: Michael, approved of the dog which was there for 1 month as was caring for it. Dog never had fleas or anything. Especially as she was a rescue who had 2 weekly check ups for when she was with us. We reported mice issues to you which no one cared to look into, so they ruined the kitchen floor. We even put down our own traps to try and help stop it. ALSO this is for 16 Martin Road, do not live there! Neighbours also shout at all sorts of hours, the wife continuously cries out and police was called in numerous occasions. Overall a vile company to be living under. Refused to pick up any of our calls after this review as well to appeal the deposit.... Read more

Did a viewing with an older gentleman who claimed to be the estate agent but was dressed in crumpled shorts and polo shirt like he was ready for a day at the beach. He also asked us what our employment and earnings were before we could even look around the property. You should do that before booking us in, not whilst we are trying to view the property. Tried to book a viewing on another property, was told I'd get a call back, but they just forgot about me. When I called again the place was already let and the "owner" was arrogant on the phone. Aside from the content of the many negative reviews for this agency, and the poor overall score, just the ridiculous responses from the owner alone should tell you that this is not a serious or professional agency to do business with. Edit: You have to laugh at the owners response here. Instead of understanding and taking on board the concerns of a potential customer, they have gone down the conspiracy route. Yes pal, it's another estate agent trying to bad mouth you, not your extremely poor service and attitude.... Read more

During 2015, I used New Era. They were friendly at first, however did dishonest and unfair things. They moved a different bed into the room than was first seen. This bed was wooden framed and was broken with sharp splinters sticking up into mattress and poorly 'repaired' with screws, and a dirty mattress. When I called them to rectify, they stalled and made a big deal about it. They charged high agency fees for an area that is low income, and as you can see from other reviews, they are accusatory and rude in nature. In summary, they are sharks who prey on Students, and will exploit you at any turn along the way. Avoid at all costs. (Which there are many) I initially couldn't be bothered to type out how bad they are, and left it blank, just a rating. However after a fictitious response from new era, pretending I was someone who dealt with them recently and that they knew me by name. I have written this review.... Read more

Its no mistake this agency has such a low rating on here. I don't doubt some of the positive reviews are requested from them. If you're a student and like having your money stolen, this is the agency for you ! However if you like dealing with people who's initial character remains them same when it comes to moving out of the property, I'd look elsewhere. Ill wait for the sarcastic and patronising reply that follows most of the criticism - which there is plenty. Enjoy remaining one of the worst rated agencies in Portsmouth, I have no reservations more disgruntled reviews will come your way in years to come.... Read more

Terrible agency. When viewing the property, the agent had hardly any clue of the property and was very un helpful with any queries we had. We actually ended up deciding to take the property and while I'm the phone to the agency, I confirmed if we definitely had the property. They told us it was definitely ours and I would be emailed a registration form which we sent back, completed, the same day. I went on to quit my job and start planning the move to Portsmouth. After a couple of days I had heard nothing but it being a weekend I thought I would hear something Monday. By Tuesday I hadn't heard anything so I rung New Era just to be told that they had given our property to someone else who was ready to move in. I asked for more explanation and to speak with Justine who was the agent that we had been dealing with. I was told she was out and she would get in contact with us. I sent her several emails and had no contact back what so ever. A real let down as I was all ready to move in to what would have been a nice flat for me and my girlfriend. Glad I haven't had to deal with this agency now if this is the way they deal with their customers.... Read more

We rented a house through New Era for three years (initially on a 6 month tenancy, thereafter rolling onto a statutory periodic tenancy). In person we found the individuals we dealt with (David & Sherrie) very friendly, approachable and helpful. The house was generally dirty and uncared for when we moved in (although I would tend to place the blame for this on an absentee landlord who clearly wasn’t willing to properly invest in maintaining the property): we even found that the boiler was full of mouse droppings when a repairman visited to undertake some work on it a couple of weeks after we moved in. Moving out was not a pain free experience: they placed a spurious claim for an extra £75 in check out fees on our deposit (the tenancy agreement stipulated £100 which we paid without issue). We disputed this (highlighting the relevant paragraphs in our contract), and the DPS Dispute Resolution Service found in our favour. The process took seven months due to the tardiness of New Era in replying to our response to their claim. It is hard to escape the suspicion that this may have been deliberate, and that part of how they operate is to assume that former tenants will give up, forget or miss deadlines if they drag the process out long enough. In summary, whilst friendly (& clearly employing at least a couple of decent people) I would be wary of dealing with them as there appears to be avariciousness underlying the business. If you do have to rent a property through them make sure you document the process fully, take photos when you move in and out (the inventory document we received was clearly a recycled one from a tenancy or two prior that bore little resemblance to reality in some areas like the garden) and ensure you keep all communications and documentation associated with the property stored safely until your tenancy is finished and deposit return secured.... I have never written a review for anything in my life, however we have had such an offensively bad experience renting from New Era that I have decided to take time out of my life to try and convince at least one person not to rent from them. Out of all of my years renting student accommodation in Portsmouth, I have never come across such dishonest, unreasonable and unhelpful letting agents. If you are thinking of renting one of their properties, PLEASE take my advice and do not. Everything they assured us would be in the property (such as a new fridge) that we had not got in writing, was not there come the start of our tenancy. Any problem you have with the property (there will likely be many as they take terrible care of them) they will always take an unreasonable amount of time to fix, and will constantly come up with excuses as to why they cannot get somebody round to fix it. The people they will send round are completely unqualified and are unlikely to fix the problem first time round (once they finally arrive). This was frustrating but not nearly as outrageous as the experience we had after leaving the property. If you have then misfortune of currently being with New Era agency, take my advice and make sure you get EVERYTHING they say with regards to your deposit in writing, especially if it is something Chris, who has consistently been dishonest, has said to you. They can not be trusted and have charged us for everything he/they assured me that we would not be charged for, things such as "relocation of furniture" which has seemed to be billed to our deposit at around £300 per hour, despite me offering to move the furniture (a few chairs) before we moved out, and him assuring me there was no need as we would not be charged. IF YOU NEED ANY FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE REFER TO THE VENN DIAGRAM I HAVE PREPARED.... Read more

AVOID THIS AGENCY A month into the tenancy it became apparent that the house had a mould problem. I soon found thick black mould forming on the ceiling around where my window was and behind my wardrobe. (If I could attach the photo I would - it was nothing like I’ve ever seen). I emailed the agency explaining the problem to which I was told that it was my fault for ‘leaving my door open whilst other people were drying clothes in their room’. And was told to buy a £5 plastic dehumidifier from Wilkos which would do the job. This agency take FULL advantage of the fact that you’re students and treat you as if you have 0 brain cells. So when it came to the end of our tenancy they tried retaining £670 for ‘painting and redecorating’ which they blamed the majority of on my room. Not only would this be ridiculous for a large room, but my room was the smallest of all the bedrooms. Who were they hiring to redecorate?? DIY SOS? £670 is an ABSURD amount by anyone’s standards, especially for a few cheap pots of magnolia. On top of this they tried keeping ridiculous costs such as £85 for relocation of ONE kitchen chair from on room to the room next door. Who they were hiring to move this wooden chair, the Queen??? We therefore took this to the Deposit Protection Agency who agreed that the mould was clearly not my fault and gave us over £600 of the claim back. This agency (as can be seen by the childish responses to some reviews) are the most UNPROFESSIONAL business I have ever had the displeasure of coming across. Please for your own sanity and bank account AVOID THIS AGENCY.... Read more

Would give 0 stars if possible. Seemed good at first, but once under contract things deteriorated. Clear that they think they can take advantage of students as my house of 5 were subject to ridiculous deposit claims which were unfounded and proven wrong by an impartial advisor. After 3 months of disputing the deposit including going to the deposit protection service, we finally got the majority of our money back, which they tried to take well over £1000 of. Accused of leaving rubbish in the house that they had taken pictures of before we had even moved in. Attempted to blame us for severe mould problem which was due to terrible ventilation in the house, stating that it had never been a problem before, despite clear evidence of previous mould cases including mould under paint. House was in disgusting condition when one of us moved in and it took several days and a visit to the office to sort out. Also, some friends of ours were unable to get the majority of their deposit back. If you are a student or you value your time and money, do not use this agency.... Read more

If you read this before you deal with this company, NEVER rent a property from these out-of-touch, condescending thieves. Not only will they refuse to fix any issues with your property on time, they will continue to scam you out of your money throughout the whole tenancy. I've was at university for 5 years and I didn't come across a poorer service. This company is so scandalous that I felt I had to write a review in the hope that is saves at least one group of people from being scammed by this company. The poor customer service l, I believe stems from their age. The older staff constantly ignore emails unless they want your money, they overcharge at the end even though they take money for a "check out fee" (this money does not go towards cleaning and maintenance). (READ THEIR CONTRACT THOROUGHLY BEFORE SIGNING) They were friendly at first but at times condescending especially regarding where our backgrounds were. In their contract are really silly statements such as not providing kitchen appliances (even though t states the house is fully furnished). Seemed friendly and fair before moving in to the house, however moved in to find full scaffolding on the house and building work which continued throughout the year! We were never told about any of this work or given any notice, with builders just unexpectedly turning up and leaving the house in a mess which we were left to deal with! Also frustrating as we were students trying to revise and do work with noisy building work! We were also told other work around the house would be done before we moved in to save the trouble and disturbance for us, however this never happened. Despite this frustration throughout the year we kept the house to a very high standard, and we were even congratulated before moving out and told the house would be fine and we had done a good job... To then receive a letter detailing the MOST TRIVIAL issues i have ever seen, a hoover needed emptying, some paper left on the living room table... If not a contractor would be called and we could lose a deposit! Shocked and frustrated as we never complained or made a fuss when they were unorganized and left us in difficult situations with the builders. Most of us live very far from Portsmouth so to come back for these pathetic issues is infuriating! Considering the amount of money they make of student lettings this seems unfair and trivial, especially as we had always been good tenants to them. They will seem nice to start but can be very pathetic when it comes to deposits etc! Suggest... Read more

Please do not use this company. They are very nice initially but this soon changes. Never had so many problems with a housing agency, After 3 months the staff that I have spoke to became very rude and would not co-operate with any work required with the property. Any work (including heating issues) took at least 3 days to arrange. The agent involved in my rented property has been patronizing, shouted down the phone at me and threatened I could be evicted. They will do anything to avoid fixing issues with a property they manage. There are much better agencies/ landlords in Portsmouth. I rented from New Era a couple of years ago as a student. They were consistently patronizing both via telephone and in the office, and left myself and two other housemates with no functioning boiler for nearly a week in winter. I wish I'd had the confidence to pursue it further, but as a young student I lacked confidence, and I feel they took advantage of myself and my fellow tenants in this respect. They carried out quarterly inspections - which while I think is excessive, I of course understand have to be done - however these were also harsh, making us feel our house was 'dirty'. We lived in our house for two years - it certainly wasn't spotless, but it was by no means dirty, and when they'd spoken to us like children on the phone and left us without heating in the middle of winter, we certainly weren't inclined to clean the house top to bottom for an inspection months before we'd actually be vacating the property. We were not treated with respect while with New Era and, having recently used another agency in the area that couldn't do enough for us, I feel now is the time to review New Era and advise others to avoid them. Renting does not have to be a difficult experience, there are other agencies that are far better.... Read more

DISGUSTING! I have never been so upset with an agency! I warn all students and non students from using them! At first the man who showed us our rental was lovely and kind, yet that changed. We were spoken to like children being told off, which just boils tempers. You never heard back from them. We asked to change our lead tenant twice and were told yes that's fine and sorted, it was never changed. They showed up with no notice "sorry we forgot" They never spoke to each other in the office so you would be chasing forever! (its a tiny office) They tried charging us for everything when we moved out which was already there and on our inventory! Tried charging me for "not hoovering" and had a "proof" image of an extremely zoomed in spec of fluff on my floor (by the guys foot) They laugh at you. They wrote our contract up wrong with the wrong amount of months let which caused immense trouble at the end of our lease. I got locked out once with no one to let me in for two days I phoned a number linked to the agency answer machine for help and was basically hung up on, after telling him I had no where to go and was a young female and just need some suggestion for help. I am also fighting to get some money back from them which occidentally went out of my account! Just don't use them!... Read more
