Lovely walk with Kites and Buzzards overhead. Quiet hides and plenty of lovely benches to sit and think. Very helpful volunteer at the main office and I believe that boat trips to the castle are available when volunteers are available. Sadly not when we visited but that didn’t spoil our enjoyment

First time over to the island and close up to the castle. Great to have the boat running again. Such a wonderful trip to make with the grandchildren. Thank you to Lewis for running the boat and getting us safely over to the island and then back again after we had done some exploring. Brilliant!

Castle on a island only reachable by national trust ferry boat. Kids will love it. Also saw otter. Falcon flew over. Good short walk around nature reserve on same site. Osprey viewing in summer.

Unfortunately, this is the third Historic Scotland site I have visited in Dumfries within 4 days that has been closed, with the same signs and no hint of when it might reopen. It's a nice walk across the nature reserve to see the castle from a distance but ultimately it's currently a walk with a view of a castle. It's a shame you can't even go on the boat and walk around the outside, even if you can't go inside.

It’s taken me 4 years to get here and, like just about every ancient building around, I turn up and it’s closed. At least there’s not a load of scaffolding wrapped around it, I suppose. It’s a pleasant circular walk around the reserve to get there, but even better if you park up at Threave Gardens and walk across. I’ll return for the ospreys and bring some sand and lime cement to hurry repairs along a bit.

First time visiting and would recommend. Excellent facilities and wheelchair access. A gentle walk from the car park brings you to excellent views of the castle. Beautiful flora and fauna as we change from summer to autumn ????

Was lovely. Another truly magical experience. Kids loved ringing the bell for the boat. Felt like something straight out of a fairy tale as the man rowed the boat over to collect us and take us over to the castle. Was something straight out of the river stix

Das Castle selber kann man im Moment nicht bewerten, es ist geschlossen und nicht erreichbar. Die winzige Fähre ist vorübergehend stillgelegt. Aber der Besuch hat sich für uns gelohnt. Es gibt einen kostenlosen Parkplatz und ausgeschilderte Wege.
Wir hatten schönstes Wetter und folgten den Weg zum Osprey Nest. Ohne Erwartung. Es gibt einen Seeadlerwart, der mit zwei Teleskopen das Nest überwacht. Wir durften lange durchsehen. Schön. Interessant. Danke dafür.

Lovely views and a nice area to walk around, the castle is closed currently with lots of work being carried out around the site, wod lkve to go back when it is open again.
The Osprey viewing platform gave a good but distant view of the nest, and we managed to get a glimpse of one of the birds as it returned after feeding.

A good and improving place for wildlife. Once they breach the bund and start flooding the meadows things should look a whole lot better.
The last visit I had good sightings of the ospreys and peregrines.

A great place for a walk and you can stop and watch the ospreys a couple of hides about unfortunately not been on the island where the castle is located but keep your eyes open for the peregrine

This is a fantastic castle that sits on its own island there is a free car park that leads onto the walk to the castle which is 0.5 miles away the footpath is very well maintained and could be accessed via a good mobility wheel chair.There are various hides for bird watching mainly the ospreys that nest nearby. The castle itself is closed due to the ongoing HSE reviews that seem to have closed almost all historic Scotland sites which I don't agree with as no work seems to be going on at any of them that I have seen but the views are worth while as are the ospreys however I didn't see them on the day we visited there is a visitor center at the car park.

Lovely walk to the castle on a flat path. Couple of muddy bits but easy avoided. Few benches around for a picnic. If you're a bird watcher the osprey nests here and there is a couple of hides on the property.

I have been here last saturday. You can go for a walk and see Castle from the Path. Visitor centre toilets and boat trip to the castle not available. Aswell hide by stepping Stones closed. Other hides open. But it is a nice circular walk with Great views of the Castle.

Ospreys on the best visible through volunteers telescope, a wonderful walk with wildlife all round. A little disappointed we couldn't visit the castle due to boat being off but a good reason to return another time.

Lived in this area for many years and once visited the castle when the boat to cross over the river to the castle was open but we we hadn't realised there is a nice walk around the bank of the river with hides along the way and a viewing point for the Ospreys. It's worth a vist but don't go as you will spoil the peace and quiet for us ????.

Beautiful castle with amazing views, you need to get a boat across, you have to ring the bell for the boatman to come and get you, nice touch, once on the island you get given an informative talk about the history of the castle and the sieges, would highly recommend a visit to Threave Castle

Well worth a visit..a small castle ruin that you need to take a small boat journey to the island that it sits on...an 800M walk from the car park to the boat but its an easy stroll for all ages. Advice is to NOT follow Google maps to 'Threave Castle' ..make sure you go to 'Threave Castle Car Park' or you'll end up on a single track road nowhere near the castle.

The unique feature of visiting this ancient castle is calling the ferryman to cross the water to the island on which it is situated.
There are plenty of information boards scattered across the site but compared to some Historic Scotland sites we have visited it is less interactive and therefore holds less interest for little ones.
It should also be noted that the walk to the ferry is approximately 15mins which, whilst enjoyable for us, might be a bit of a trek for those with limited mobility.

Interesting site. Huge historical interest and plenty of information about it. There is a nice boat crossing to the castle. In addition we also looked at the ospreys and also saw a red kite.

Beautiful walk ways, so well kept. I visited June and saw Osprey chick being fed on nest as dad brought in massive fish. Visited again end of July to see the last of three chicks to fledge, still thinking about it. How wonderful was that! All on our doorstep too. We are so lucky. Thanks to all volunteers for knowledge and stories.

There was a nice walk up to the castle. After that, we took a small boat across a river and to the castle. The castle looks beautiful from the outside, and the vaulted ceiling inside was impressive. However the upper floors were not open due to bird nesting which was slightly disappointing, but that didn't really detract from the overall experience too much. There was also an area where you could view Ospreys, which was great.

We ended using google to get us to the Castle . We took the wrong way and found out later there was no public access. What happened to freedom to roam? Well we were able to get some great photos. Sorry we didn’t read the signs until we left.

Just brilliant. Ring the bell to summon the boat. Wildlife, deer, otters, Ospreys etc. Car park by farm buildings with a walk in beautiful farm land towards the river. Hides available to view wildlife. Staff knowledge first class and very helpful. Photography available is abundant if you are an enthusiast or just a snapper.

Firstly not expensive to visit. Easy to visit by car. Free car parking. I'd buy the guide book as it gives background to your visit and how this fits in to history. And with a good walk away from the car park and the road the countryside is so quiet except for the birds.
Best to visit on a blue sky day for photos.
Ring the bell and a small motorboat comes to collect you and be taken to Black Douglas's former castle.
Not so much to see, but more to appreciate with the guide book.
On this occasion part was closed off for repairs and the upper part was closed due to nesting birds.
If you are in to bird watching there are some hides and telescopes with the guide to advise on.
For me it was a photo and history outing. Nice also for the country walk. Not sure this would suit wheelchair users - you may wish to contact them before travelling.
Bring your own food and drink, as shop only had a few souvenirs. By the way - castle and grounds have no toilets, so use the facilities at the info centre before you trek to the castle.
For overseas tourists this would be worth a look at for the novelty of a Scottish castle on an island and the little ferry boat crossing.
Enjoy your day.... I did.

It's more about the journey than the castle itself - there's a boat ride over, ring the bell to get the boat person's attention. Between April and November you might also get to see osprey from the viewing platform, but it's not a guarantee!

The castle was still closed when we visited but it was a lovely day for a walk and we saw the Osprey nest and the male osprey waiting for his mate to arrive from Africa! The ladies at the osprey viewing platform were very helpful. I may have seen the nest without their help but I definitely would not have spotted the osprey! Well worth a visit.

Threave estate circular walk fully open and good underfoot. Peregrine falcon on the castle. Whooper swans arriving on the marshes. Goosanders on the river and much more. Well worth a visit. Fingers crossed for the return of the ospreys in March.

It's a shame you can't take dogs over to Threave Castle on the boat but the walk to the castle is lovely and you can do a circuit right round and back to the car park.

Threave Castle was a formidable fortress in medieval times. Now it is a beautiful ruin. It's the only castle I know of where you need to get to on a boat. All you need to do is ring the bell and the ferryman will come and ferry over to the island. A visit to this Romantic is highly recommended.

Wonderfully atmospheric place, where it is easy to imagine what life was like five hundred years ago. Also a great place for a picnic on a sunny day. There's also a good country walk and lots of wildlife, we saw deer and geese flocking.

This is a pleasant walk and boat trip to the castle, also great for twitchers and they have a bat spotting tour..but book early.. we were unfortunate to miss the boat ride to the castle due to the river banks bursting, the jetty was submerged... definitely going back..

Threave castle was about a 2hr drive from the East of Glasgow / where I live. There is a good size car park for the castle and it is certainly family and child friendly. My partner and I have Historic Scotland passes so when we arrived we went to the desk and bought out tickets. We asked when the next boat was the gentlemen who served us, informed us we would follow a 800m board walk (this is also wheel chair friendly as it is all flat). Once we arrive we will see a bell which we will need to 'ring' then someone will come and get us. It was a lovely day so we did not mind the walk at all. There are serval gates you must close behind you during the walk once we arrived I rang the bell and shortly after a lady came over in a small boat. She was friendly and informative. She gaves us some life jackets to wear then we got into the boat. The journey is a short 2 minute boat ride at the very most. Like all Historic Scotland castles, this castle had connotations and information boards as you walk around the castle. The castle itself or what is left of it is like a shell with some areas of access and some boarded off. Threave castle is definately a ruin. On our journey back on the boat it was the same lady. She asked if we wanted to do a short loop on the boat and we did. I thought this was a very nice touch and my partner and I knew this is out with the norm so we both really appreciated this.

You can take your dog on the surrounding walks, but not to the castle itself as it involves a short boat ride to get to it. Lots of wildlife to see on the walk to the ferry point.
The castle itself is a shell, but you can climb up the tower to a certain point, see the dungeon and get a good sense of layout from the information boards.

Fantastic castle ruins in the heart of Galloway. From the car park you take a lively walk down to the river where you cross by means of a boat to the castle island. This all adds to the excitement and anticipation which is well rewarded once you cross.
Threave castle is one of the most historic castles in Scotland with connections to the wars of independence and Robert the Bruce!
Plenty to see and do with some stunning scenery all around!
The Castle is just next to the little town of Castle Douglas which you simply can't miss for some fantastic local shopping, excellent food and is the food town of Dumfries and Galloway.

Threave Castle is situated on a small island with access via a very short boat ride following a 10 minute walk from the car park. The castle itself consists of a single tower structure with excellent views of the surrounding countryside. If as we were you might be lucky to see wild Otter and Red Kites also.

Nice castle in a beautiful setting. We arrived before it opened so did the nature walk and spotted a couple of roe deer grazing close to the path. There are also an osprey viewing platform and various hides for viewing the huge variety of birds and other wildlife. The short boat ride across to the island was lovely and the castle was worth the visit with its harbour still pretty much complete and the castles vaulted ceiling and pit prison.

Gorgeous hidden gem. Travel back in time to Threave Castle across a small waterway. Really enjoyable as wasn't too intense for children....ie. we didn't have to drag them round for too long!

Superb and scenic location. Spotted deer and Osprey and enjoyed looking round the castle. My boys loved the bonus wee boat trip as we couldn't land at the pier and the circular walk to the various hides.

Stunning example of a Scotish Castle with a moat (river Dee). Great fun including a short boat ride and beautiful views of the countryside. A bit tough to find as Google maps directions were unclear and we ended up on the wrong side in a farmers field. Great staff including Pete who was super friendly and informative.

Great little place -not just the castle ruins but the 2 minute ferry over the water to get to it, the story boards about the infamous Archibald the Grim and 'Black Douglases', then the Osprey nest lookout point with enthusiastic birder in hand to tell us about Mr and Mrs Osprey and offspring. More bird/animal hides if that's your interest or a donder beside the river and a bit of the woods otherwise.

A fun experience being taken over to this imposing castle by boat. It's a short walk to get there and there's an interesting alternative route with good views to get back to the car park, making this a circular walk. It's an easy walk (8km return, some of it along an old railway track) from Threave Garden to the castle too. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable as well.

Beautiful gardens with a variety of plants, flowers, vegetables, colors and textures. Roam around as you please, you can walk on the grass, hide under the willow tree and even buy plants and veggies!

Now just a square keep in the middle of nowhere this once mighty fortress stands on an island. There is an 800 metre path to the castle from the car park. We visited on a dry day but I imagine it could be muddy and slick in the wet. The final approach to the castle is by row boat. (there are two strong young men available for the task). A wooden bridge allows access across a dry moat and into the bailey where a flight of steps leads to the first floor entrance. From here one can descend to the ground floor. Access to the higher floors and the glorious view was denied to the visitor at the time of our visit because of the nesting Ospreys and Red Kites. Even so, Threave is well worth the time to visit. DOGS are NOT allowed on the island. Do take a drink with you in hot weather.

Well maintained and nicely curated path to this island castle. Wonderful views from all over. The journey to this castle is very amusing crossing the small lake on a boat is fantastic. Good scenery of the mountains, trees and the lake. The views inside this castle are worthy of watching it many times.

This is a very beautiful place with green hills and a small lake. The castle is situated on an little island so we got on a small boat to get there, it takes only one minute. From the island you can watch peregrines living in the wild through a telescope. There is also an osprey watching platform.

Well maintained paths lead to the river crossing to the castle island. Some terrain could be tricky for less able people but lovely to visit. Toilet facilities available at car park.

Really lovely gardens, they are worth a visit young and old, ok for wheelchair user's, two cafes. Toilets shop. The castle is worthy of a visit, at present a pair of peregrin are breeding so limited to ground floor only, unfortunately wheelchair users would not be able to go to castle, very uneven and inaccessible plus you need to go across river in boat. But gardens are very good for all.

What a totally unexpected awesome experience we had today not only was the Castle amazing and the boat over to it a brilliant added fun point but the best , most exquisite part of our visit today had to be the Osprey viewing platform where we could see both Ospreys on the nest. We were told that they hopping for an egg in the not too distant future. It was amazing and we will return 5?

Lovely to visit, the lashing rain is just par for the course in Scotland. The castle is quite a hike to get to along the country lanes and through many gates, followed by a short boat ride across the river Dee. The boat driver gave us a little history of the river and the it's name. We explored the castle as best as we could, but a lot of it was fenced off because some Peregrine Falcons were nesting up top and we were told that as they're protected species we can't really explore the castle much right now. A shame as we may not have chance to return again.

Well worth a visit. There's lovely walks around the grounds and dog are welcome on part of the site. They can't go on the island so be prepared to split your group if possible

Beautifully maintained castle, which is nestled on an island. Involves a short walk on muddy paths and a short boat ride. You even need to call the boatman using a bell! Pretty exciting and a good day out. The Osprey viewing season is over, but we did spot a family of Peregrine falcons. A good family day out.

Make sure you wear sturdy walking shoes /boots as you have to walk along a muddy track before getting on a wee boat to get to the ruins of the castle. Only takes about 10 minutes to see the ruin.

This place is a MUST if you find yourself in the Castle Douglas area. A gentle 10 minute stroll through nature to a jetty, where you ring a big brass bell to call the ferry man. Once on the Island, the Castle of Threave is all yours to explore. Imagine the great banquets and the cries from the prisoners in the dungeon! Everything is possible in Threave Castle ... listen to the Ospreys they may have tales to tell. If you sit patiently you may be rewarded with sights of otters playing in the river.

This was a superb castle to visit, from the walk between fields to get to the boat where we saw Red Kites, to the crossing itself over to the island where the castle sits. If it's a good day, take a picnic as the grounds are grassy and wonderful. The castle itself is spectacular, inside and out. When we visited there was restricted access to the tower due to Peregrine Falcons nesting. We were totally fine with it, but could see that folks could be displeased with not getting full access. Once back on the main land we visited the Osprey viewing point and saw the mother feeding her chicks. Very, very special! Altogether an excellent trip. Also, Dylan, who works for Historic Scotland is a font of information and can tell you about surrounding hillforts and other hidden gems to visit.

My most favourite castle in the world. I've been visiting it for 25 years. How many castles are on an island that you have to reach by going in a little motor boat (it used to be a rowing boat) after having rung a bell to call the boat over AND were built by a man called Archibald the Grim? Sometimes we find owl pellets around the base of the castle. Ospreys nest successfully nearby too, so take binoculars. We always take a picnic and chill out on the grass before taking a look around.

Lovely staff, fun tiny boat ride, cute island - but sadly the castle is rather limited. They seem to often have peregrines nesting at the top and therefore they shut off the top floor, leaving very little castle left to explore. Perhaps more of a bird watchers trip (they have an osprey nest viewing platform metres from the boat).

Cant express how much fun visiting was. Nice walk to it. Boat cross and we got to see lots of wildlife. Castle was lovely to explore. Staff were ace. Only £4.50 per person.

We visited this wonderful place yesterday and yes, it is about .75 of a mile each way but there are plenty of benches where you can sit and catch your breath/straighten your back/relieve your bad knees (I have all of those things...!) and look at a lovely view whilst doing so.
When you get to the jetty, you can either ring the bell for the lovely attendant to come and take you across in the little motor-launch or go a little further and watch the Ospreys. We did both and I wouldn't have missed it! I have some fab photos of the castle and views - not so many of the Ospreys - they were a bit too distant for my telephoto lens, although the 'bins' found them easily.
We spotted red and roe deer too.
Great food at nearby Castle Douglas too!
