Where to start...We had an appauling service from another estate agent, and by the time we contacted Downers, I had reeached the end of my tether. I was not sure if we were heading into more of the same. However, Downers have been an absolute tonic. Nicky Padbury, being the first person I spoke to, kindly listened to all my worries (almost like some kind of therapist and poor lady), and she put me at ease right away. Nicky then introduced us to Richard. Richard took control and eased us through the marketing and sale of our house in a most professional manner. The photography was excellent; Richard took his time and picked the best weather to take the best shots. Once the brocure has been approved, bookings for viewings started coming through in volume. We had more booked in the first couple of days than we had seen in 3 months from our previous estate agent. The house sold within 10 days of hitting the market with Downer. We really could not be more pleased. Thanks also go to Fraser, who kept us informed of progress and was happy to answer any queeries we had as things moved forward. What a great team!

We viewed a property that had tenants during the viewing that we ultimately decided to let. We signed the lease on the 7th of September and didn’t initially notice the disgusting state of the house as we didn’t move in until the 16th of September. With the tenants gone, it was very obvious and very evident it was filthy and many things were broken.
With the property inventory I had five working days to annotate the document and return to them so my concerns could be documented. I reached out to Downer and Co to inform them basically the entire report was incorrect and possibly before the previous tenants and was hoping they could send someone out that could capture the true state of the property accurately. I was given the name and email address of the property manager responsible for the house. I emailed her, she was on holiday for a week. After not hearing back past the date of her return, I phoned again and eventually was told someone else named was the property manager.
I was then told ‘sorry the property isn’t as clean as you’d hoped’ and I should have reported this within five working days, which I had. Eventually after much hassle, I’ve been offered two hours of a cleaner apparently employed by Downer and Co. When I was eventually contacted about booking the cleaning, I was given a choice of two dates which weren’t convenient then was basically being treated as if they were doing me such an incredible favour for coming to correct the ‘missed areas’.
I own a property I currently let and have rented several in my lifetime. The property wasn’t cleaned to a professional or domestic standard or frankly at all and I think Downer and Co should be embarrassed. This is not acceptable.
I never expected this property to be immaculate or perfect. However I think moving into a property with broken glass in a cabinet and the previous tenant's hair and toothpaste in all the drains and sinks is too much. Please see attached pictures from this £2200 pcm property and be careful letting from Downer and Co.

Downer & Co were our property managers for 6 years for our flat, and they were always so helpful, responsive and efficient. Any issue we had was resolved as quickly as possible (the landlords were great too!) and I would definitely use them for renting/selling again in the future. They kept us hanging on with a potential buyer who obviously wasn’t going to buy and withdrew after 6 months.
We gave Downers the required 4 weeks notice they asked for, and they immediately (same day) withdrew our advert on Rightmove and took down the For Sale sign. They said we would still need to pay them if we found a buyer during that 4 weeks. We eventually sold without an estate agent.

Richard Bailey and Fraser Crumlish at Downers, Newbury. Why would you want to go to any other estate agents to sell your house! Richard gave an honest opinion on my Mum's house. It was a probate sale and he dealt with me in a sympathetic way but still being honest about the house's faults whilst building up it's USPs. Gave a realistic probate/guide price, took some pretty stunning pictures of the lovely garden and also of the not so stunning tired interior, making it look like a palace. The sale was quick with about 10 sealed bids. However, we had to wait for probate which took 10 weeks but Fraser handled everything beautifully, managing both my and the purchasers expectations. Richard and Fraser both went the extra mile when the survey found a fair few issues and handled the renegotiation very professionally. Fraser held my hand throughout the process keeping me calm and sane through the sad sale of our family home. I can't thank either of them enough. Oh, did I say, they are both lovely chaps too!

I’d actually put my house on the market with another Estate Agent initially, but felt there was no urgency to sell my property, nor did I feel they were on my side.

We came to Downer Letting after we approached several local agents and were particularly impressed by Downer Letting. Catherine was professional, efficient, and quick in responding to communication and was helpful in answering all our queries. Downer also appear to have a good database of prospective applicants and found for us a qualify tenant within a few days. Lee then took over the process and he is well versed in the technicalities of the rental process and we had a smooth experience agreeing the tenancy. They were helpful in terms of sorting the paperwork out for us quickly; however when it came to actually moving in they did not inform us about the current electricity supplier switch over that was taking place and we have now been billed by two separate suppliers-as we sorted our own utilities when first moving in as specified.

I think it really depends on which individual agent you get but unfortunately, ours at Downer was quite complacent. They sold us the dream and the low % seemed a no-brainer but the service left a lot to be desired. They (quite openly) relied on the aggregator sites and would do no more.
We had barely any viewings so gave notice and switched to Jones Robinson. More expensive but the difference was remarkable- better photos, weekly updates, double the number of viewings and we had an offer within 4 weeks which was negotiated well.

We sold our house through another agent in Thatcham, but the house we bought was bought through Downer and Co. The service, professionalism and empathy from the staff at Downer and Co was of a much higher quality than the other agent. Our introduction to Downer & Co was via Lee Fenn - Tripp and his on line property newsletter. We were looking to buy a flat in Newbury but live a long way away and had only limited knowledge of the town and its property market. He was extremely helpful and over several months provided us with a great deal of assistance in a very professional, objective and independent manner. He clearly has a very good knowledge of the market was patient and didn't once give us the 'hard sell'.
Advance 9 months and after moving into our new property, plans changed and so we decided to seek a suitable tenant. Here again Lee helped us with good honest advice and took the time to visit the property and discuss the various options. His honesty and up front approach meant it was a no brainer as far as appointing Downer & Co to manage the property on our behalf.
From there on we have dealt with a number of the other Downer & Co staff and they have all been very helpful and efficient. Catherine Herriott has been our main contact and has done an excellent job in finding a tenant and looking after all the associated requirements. Being rather new to the position of landlord she has answered all our questions clearly and promptly.
It's still early days and only time will tell how the rest of our experience unfolds. However early indications are good and based on our experience thus far, we can recommend the property managements skills of the team at Downer & Co in Newbury.

I have been a customer of Downer's Letting Agency in Newbury for approaching 10 years and they have provided an excellent service throughout.
I find they manage to balance being professional and efficient while remaining friendly and approachable and over the years have helped us find new tenants that ideally match our property.
I want them to take the overhead of managing the property and lease agreements away from me as I don't have time to handle these aspects of letting a property - but to keep me informed when something needs bringing to my attention: they do exactly that.
Their fees are fair - I pay for a service and they deliver that service exactly in the way I would want, also making me feel as though they value my business (as apposed to 'just being another paying customer').
I would definitely recommend Downer as a letting agency and hope to continue working with them for another 10 years.

Incredibly poor service from a perceived ‘good’ estate agency. Viewed a property (Thursday) that was for sale, questioned the let agreed sign outside during my visit, informed that it was irrelevant as the property was still on the market. Was shown the property and presented a number of questions, informed these answers would be emailed to me. Two days later (Saturday) received an email requesting viewing feedback, highlighted I was awaiting clarity on questions regarding the property and reiterated these. Rang on Monday to chase (no answer) rang Tuesday spoke to a unbelievable out righteous women who told me the property had been taken off the market and let on Friday. Attempted to defend allowing me to view the property and the feedback email sent after it had been let. Disgusting!

We have been renting a property, managed by Downers, in Newbury for the last 6 years.
From the very start we were treated extremely well and with a great deal of respect. Downers were there at the initial viewing to introduce the landlord and answer questions. They were also there at the subsequent viewing and the local knowledge and advice given by Lee Fenn Tripp at that time helped with our decision.
When we decided give notice on our tenancy, Downers visited the house to take photos and during what is always a very stressful process they showed a great amount of consideration whilst accompanying potential new tenants.
The check out process has been handled in a professional and timely manner and any questions that we had have been answered with honestly and advice given freely.
Estate Agents often get bad 'press' sometimes justly deserved. We hope however that in our search for a new property we will find an agency that is a good as Downer and Co. and that they will also deserve the good 'press' that Downers deserve.

Drove 20 miles one way for a viewing arranged for Saturday morning. Agent doesn't show up. I rang their office to check if I am at the right address. A nice lady puts me on hold for a minute, and then cheerfully informs that she is sorry, but they had no viewings arranged. That's it. Newbury is a seller's market, so they don't actually care about customers.

Not very nice experience with the agency. Maybe because the vodafone headquarter is there, the properties are popular, some of the staff there are not very nice/considerable. A popular independent estate agent in Newbury. We have used them in the past as tenants and also currently as a landlord. The lettings dept managed by Lee, have a can-do attitude. Their fees for tenants are very reasonable, hence why I use them - I want my tenant to not be paying lots in admin fees (unlike other agents in Newbury).
