Martyn was very helpful upon my move in and viewing. However when it was time for me to move out, they withheld some of my deposit money because the property wasn't clean enough. I didn't complain when upon my move in the floor was as dirty as the grount outside, but now I got charged money because I didn't clean? They even provided pictures about how it wasn't "clean". There was no dirt on the pictures.

When I first moved to the area in 2003 with my girlfriend, I was looking for somewhere to stay. The first flat that Martyn Russell showed me was very unimpressive, to say the least. I told him our objections to it, and he listened, and I have to be honest, at that point I wasn't feeling very optimistic. A few days later he called back with another property to look at. We went along, not really expecting much, but the house that he showed us was perfect in every way. He had done an exemplary job at listening to our feedback and gauging what kind of house we wanted to live in.
We moved in and enjoyed living there until a change in our situation (starting a family, wanting to get on the property ladder) meant it was no longer the right place for us. I still have fond memories of that house and our experience with Martyn to this day, and smile whenever we drive past their offices.

Great service, quick and efficient. Staff were personable and polite and answered queries quickly. Would highly recommend, especially after being let down by so many cowboy estate agents, that just wasted our time. Thank you Dawn and Lauren for all your help.

Martyn and his team managed our house for over 10 years and we couldn't have picked a better company. We found them extremely professional but also very personable and got to know them really well over the years. Always dealing with the same staff made it feel that our loved house was in very capable hands and they would always go the extra mile if needed as we had moved up to Scotland. When it came time they also sold our house for us. I would thoroughly recommend Martyn Russell and his team for any property services/selling if asked.

Experience Ive had with Martyn Russell is fine, I think some reviews below although I can empathise as I was a "student" myself years ago, is perhaps escape goat-ish?
You review the property, if you dont like it nobody is forcing you to move in.
As for this property I managed to get ALL the admin done over email and the odd call, which made moving in day, easy.
The property is exactly what i viewed and will serve its purpose as is.
P.S I've been in here for not a week but everything works as it should locks, windows, heating and hot water.

Waited 20 minutes for an estate agent to turn up to the property they were supposed to show us, called them and they said the guy was on his way. Waited another 30 minutes with no one turning up before leaving.

Incredibly unprofessional, made it explicitly clear i wanted to be the first to view a rental property, underwent a viewing with this in mind, only to hear the following day the house I wanted had been reserved without a viewing the day before, without us being made aware. Shocking communication an very unprofessional

BEWARE!! My daughter rented a student house off this agent and I have to say I have never dealt with a more unprofessional outfit. There were a catalogues of problems throughout her tenancy. To name but a few, the house was filthy, the carpets were disgusting, one room wasn't painted as requested, microwave didn't work, washing machine didn't work, there was no desk in one of the rooms as promised, there was an old broken TV in the living room. The electrical socket in my daughter's bedroom was hanging off the wall ( there was only one), when she plugged her charger in she got a slight electrical shock. After continued promises from the agent to put these things right, nothing seemed to happen. Which is when I got involved. I have to say Dawn at this agent desperately needs some customer service training, I found her rude and obnoxious, enough said!! Anyway, with a very lot of arguing we did managed to get most things sorted, evan if we had to drive down from Leeds to clean the carpets and sort the electrics out. At the end of her tenancy she got a letter to say the house needed cleaning and recommended a cleaner, we paid for the cleaner to come round and do her stuff, the thought being we didn't want to lose any deposit. How wrong we were! They took off £100 off each girl as they said it wasn't clean enough, bit of a joke considering what state the house was in 12 months earlier. Obviously we disputed this, especially as they had recommended the cleaner. Thankfully the whole debacle is over with now, but please be very aware when you rent a house from this company. If I knew how bad they were we would have stayed well clear of them. If you are unfortunate to have rented a house with them, please just document every bit of correspondence with them. Good luck!

Jean, Totally agree, these guys are SCAMMERS, they took 85% of my deposit and charged me for the removal of rubbish that was left there before me. They told my landlord to evict me. They constantly told me 'phone the landlord' and the landlord told me 'call Martin Russel the rip off merchants'. They knew I was a student and charged me the full wack with no discount. Hope they all burn in hell for their sins. Another case of a greedy estate agent. DO NOT TOUCH - EVEN WITH BARGE POLE unless you want to pay for their comfortable living.

To begin with I assumed Martyn Russell to be an excellent letting agency; however when we came to vacate the property, my opinion certainly changed. Would like to say Jane and Lorraine were great however.
The check out and deposit return is a farce. The inventory that was brought to the property on check out was not the one submitted on entry; despite faults with the property when we moved in and during the tenancy (which were recorded) and the fact that the garden had begun to be renovated before we moved out, we were still charged hundreds of pounds to have these items 'restored'! The landlord and landlady hurling foul mouthed abuse at a tradesperson, infeststion of ants, no heating for days in the winter, a fire built in the middle of the garden by the gardeners to burn trees and trades not turning up when promised are just some of the things we put up with during our tenancy. Farcical.
We're lucky as the company foots the bill, but I would say to anyone, as you're going to be charged anyway, why bother keeping the property in a good condition - wish we hadn't bothered. Would love to challenge it, but I have better things to do with my time than spend hours forwarding emails, photos etc to the dispute resolution people. I have a life and as they get paid to spend hours making this stuff up - I'm not prepared to waste my time. BEWARE!

We have had only good experiences with Martyn Russell. They have managed the letting of our flat in Reading to our satisfaction since 2005. It is important to us that we have been able to rely on their services as, for the majority of the time since then, we have been located abroad. Any problems experienced have been handled in a friendly,efficient and prompt manner. As a consequence, we have no hesitation in recommending them.

I've been renting for a few years now and have recently moved into the area, then found a property I really liked the look of on Martyn Russell Letting Agency website. The whole process has run so smoothly, from viewing, through the referencing process to my collection of the keys and moving in last month. I personally would be very happy to recommend them - my main priority had been to move in to a new home before Christmas and they did everything to make that happen. I would just like to add to the previous reviews on this board at add my recent experience with them. Add everything gone smoothly I'm sure the only thing I would not like is the amount of administration fee to pay.... However this is not the case they have shown poor communication, poor 'people skills' there language and tone can be abusive, also you have to remember letting agents are unregulated by an ombudsman service. For the service they provide from a tenants point of view the fees are too much when compared to others, my advice only use them if you have to, they don't deal with problems very well from my experience. Just like to add no problem with my landlord or house just the admin 'middleman' side. I always paid upfront in time and never did anything wrong. They tried to make their problems mine this place definitely has negative kharma.

I have used Martyn Russell and his team to let my property in East Reading for 4 years now, and each year they have provided an excellent service - letting the property with minimal fuss and maximum effort in as little time as possible. They are quite happy to advise, but will let you do things your own way if you wish. They are excellent at keeping you in the loop in terms of finding a new tenant, and listen to your requirements carefully. A fantastic service from a great team - I would not hesitate to recommend them!
