Two years ago I had an awful experience selling my house unsuccessfully through the local branch of a national estate agent. I then used Howard Douglas Estate Agents to sell and the service was exemplary. Very professional, attentive and very good at feedback following any viewings. They have sold my house with the minimum of fuss or stress having been totally honest and straightforward throughout the proceedings. We recently bought our house in Buckfastleigh through Howard Douglas Estate Agency and received a first class service. We were moving from Brighton but Barbara was brilliant in supporting our search and making numerous viewing appointments that worked with our trips to the area. She was really knowledgeable and helpful about the area and supported our decision making. She was also extremely responsive and good at communicating with both parties solicitors and the vendor, so much so we managed to go from offer to completion in less than eight weeks. This is the fastest we have ever achieved and have bought and sold seven properties. Her professionalism was definitely instrumental in making this happen. Mixed experiences with both the sales and lettings side of Howard Douglas. While I found the lettings side to be generally fairly competent and friendly, I was not impressed the sales team. The (I presume) inexperience of one particular member of staff nearly cost us our sale. This person was quite rude to me initially and I was treated as if I was being irritating for checking on the progress of the sale. Meanwhile, the lack of communication between estate agent and solicitor / buyers effectively slowed the entire sale down, to the point that it nearly destroyed the chain (when there shouldn't have been a chain, because this sale should have progressed months prior!). It wasn't until this person was removed from the sale and another (I presume) more experienced staff member was assigned, that the sale rapidly progressed to exchange, and completion soon after. I would hope that this experience helps this staff member to realise the job they are actually there to do. While there was friendliness towards the end, once the realisation of urgency was apparent, I feel that much of the difficulties could have been avoided if there was more coaching and guidance from a more experienced staff member, on how to handle things and at what pace! This should have been a straightforward sale, with no chain and first time buyers. But it ended up not being the case at all. A real shame.... Read more

Deeply unpleasant experience with a person called Natalie at this agency – was rude and dismissive when I asked for clarification regarding a property, and then told me there was no point in applying for any properties with Howard Douglas. Very, very strange way of treating people. Howard Douglas clearly only care about landlords so I would suggest avoiding if you are looking to rent – the irony being that I am looking to rent in the short to medium term before buying. Iv been into the agent a few time’s and have always felt I was bothering them by asking questions. On a recent occasion I had a viewing booked for one of their properties, after driving 40 minutes to the appointment the agent was a no show I rang the office to be told “Sorry the property has been let, we tried to call you a few hours ago”. This was a blatant lie as I had no missed calls or any voicemails, plus when organising the viewing I didn’t leave my number as they didn’t ask (I had to promt the lady to even take my name). The property was only a short walk from the office so if they knew they hadn’t spoken to me directly they should have at least met me outside to save me waiting for them and to tell me in person. I have worked for a agent before and know this isn’t a way to treat customers. If you haven’t spoken to the customer directly you need to make the up most effort to let them know it’s been cancelled. I’d avoid them in the future.... Read more
