Avoid at all costs if renting with this agency, take ages to sort out maintenance issues, agents on the phone are really condescending and unhelpful (specifically on the maintenance line). When we first moved in the carpet had stains all over it and the garden was covered in cigarette buds.Just generally not a good estate agent to use if renting

So far has to be the worst agency I dealt with in years when it comes to checking out! Poor communication, doesn't care about their tenants, we would avoid them next time. I've rented with many other agencies before, never had such a poor experience.

My daughter has just been given the key and is starting to move into her new flat,
With the Covid government restrictions still in place
nearly every aspect 'apart from the viewing' has been done by telephone or computer.
All the team at Hunters are so kind and understanding, they have spent time explaining to my daughter and myself about each aspect of the legal and paperwork side (through a computer portal) and many telephone conversations.
Trying to read legal jargon is like trying to read a book in another language that you are not familiar with and because it is legal, it's daunting and so worrying you really want to get it right first time.
So all of the team have done their part patiently talking us through each stage so that it has not been daunting and scary.
I will follow up this review in a couple of weeks time I'm once my daughter is moved in totally.

I've got written evidence from Southampton Borough council HMO department that this is not the case. And I also don't currently rent with a hmo licence but they still think they are know better.
Also careful if you are a unmarried couple because they said that does not make me a family. U have to be married or blood related to be a family.

I don't know where to start with these guys, but if you have a house to sell then I can't more highly recommend them. They impressed from the start. We had a few agents come to quote and not only was theirs the most reasonable, but they showed some really impressive knowledge of the area. They'd obviously put time and care into their research from the start. The marketing process was quick and painless. They worked around my awkward timings as I was working from home and got some truly lovely pictures of the house. At every visit they showed complete respect for the house and took the time to go through their stringent covid safety steps, which I had been worried about. Finally, when we lost our first buyer, they pulled out all the stops to find us another to try and help prevent our onward purchase falling through. They kept me fully updated and were so proactive with sesrching potential purchasers, viewings, assessments of the purchasers etc. Not only that, they were so personable and sympathetic that I felt genuine care from them. When we were searching for a flat for university a friend suggested Hunters, we decided to have a look around and the go for Hunters as they looked like our best option.
Before, during and after the Pandemic they have always been available to talk to, to help us through any issues we were having, especially being new to the renting market, no question felt like a stupid question.

If you're considering renting through Hunters, don't. We had no end of problems, including not-so-professional cleaners at the beginning of our tenancy, repairs taking longer than three months to complete, including replacing a badly cracked hob, and jobs marked as complete that were never even started.
The icing on the cake was being billed at the end of the tenancy for things that were, or were due to, contractors not completing work they claimed to have done, even though we made absolutely sure that Hunters knew this was the case at every step in the process. Thank goodness for the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.
I'd write reams more, but my housemate Bradley Garrod already did, so best to take a look at his review.
We're very glad to be out of there now, and with a fantastic independent landlord who does things properly. Like actually getting big problems sorted within a few days of them being reported, rather than a few months, or not at all. I see there are some positive reviews from other tenants, so perhaps it's just students they couldn't care less about? Either way, I'd avoid them like the plague. It's not worth the risk.

Luckily I was never a tenant with Hunters, but I have had the misfortune of seeing their staff in action through a friend who was a tenant with them.
Their staff were rude to me when I was present in the property. Their staff have also been repeatedly condescending and rude to my friend both in writing and verbally. Hunters also maintained the property horrendously, and the contractors appeared utterly useless whenever I was present too.
I would never recommend anyone to use this company as a tenant.
Edit: since receiving this response I emailed Mr. Clegg. It's now 9 days later and I've not received a response. I think this summarises my friend's experience.
- They will pretend to care in the public view but in reality they don't.
Edit 2: Upon seeing my edit, Mr Clegg has responded the next morning, stating that he had been very busy recently.

I could write pages about how awful my experience has been with Hunters, but here’s just a taste of my last year with them:
- Rude, condescending and unhelpful staff at all levels of the branch. They blatantly lie to you too - we were mislead about the tenancy deposit scheme at the beginning. At the end of the tenancy we were not returned the undisputed amount of the deposit for over 2 weeks. When I contacted them they assured me it was sent when they claimed it was, but I later got a receipted dated the day I reminded them.
- Appalling communication even with their own online maintenance site. Contractors will arrive unannounced and let themselves into the property (complaining about this doesn't stop them repeatedly breaking the contract).
- Contractors visiting several times to fix seemingly simple issues (such as replacing a blind) only to conclude they're without the correct tools for the job. We had the same contractor visit 3 times to clean the back garden upon our arrival (pictures provided) only to realise that he had no power washer, and then the next time realise there was no outside tap. This issue never got resolved (pictures provided), and then Hunters tried to take a £70 fee for cleaning the garden out of our deposit at the end of the tenancy. Our dispute on this matter succeeded as it was clearly evident to anyone except Hunters that the work was never completed. Other simple issues such as damaged chairs (see picture) didn't get sorted for 6 months or longer.
- Cleaning staff who cannot clean. When we moved in, a "professional" cleaner attended for several hours (according to them, 10 hours) for the house to still be in a grimy, disgusting state. This was so bad that the Tenancy deposit scheme largely removed Hunters cleaning fee as the property was in such a bad state. We viewed the property in a nice condition. I've attached some additional pictures of the property when we arrived.
- Remove your access to their online maintenance request system at the end of the tenancy so you cannot use anything from there as evidence in deposit disputes.
If that wasn't enough to make you avoid this company, here is one of many awful experiences we have had with Hunters:
When we arrived, the hob was cracked (see pictures). When we viewed the property, the hob was not in this state. It appeared a previous contractor had glued the hob back together. That alone should raise some serious health and safety concerns.
Hunters' documents state they should take no longer than 3 months to attempt to resolve issues. After 3 months from our report, we finally got a new hob quoted for and installed. This new hob was induction, so none of our pans worked. Amazingly they had the hob swapped out again the next day for an electric one.
Weeks later, the hob tripped the fuse and then refused to turn back on. It turns out that the electric hob they installed was not rated for the socket it was plugged into. According to the person replacing it with a second induction hob, our house could have burnt down. All of this happened because they refused to buy a cheap £30 pan set on Amazon, which they ended up doing anyways on top of 2 extra hob replacements.
I hope anyone foolish enough to rent through Hunters does not experience the hell we have gone through over the past year. Sadly, I don't think they will change their ways based on the responses I have got from raising my concerns with this branch's staff.
My comments on Mr Clegg's response:
I do not consider the independent inventory clerks report thorough at all: they stated two of our fire alarms were not working during the midterm report, which I concluded to be in perfect working order when I checked 30 minutes after receiving the report. They also failed to record that Hunters left us with no batteries in the fire alarms at the start of the tenancy.
I informed your staff that the cleaners made an extremely poor effort at cleaning the property at the start of the tenancy. They never bothered to act further on the issue.

If I could give no stars I would. The worst company I have ever had the displeasure of working with. Highly unorganised - I spoke to several different agents throughout my time in a property, few of which knew what was going on. The property itself was absolutely appauling and Hunters took months and months to resolve issues which were highlighted in our tenancy agreement. Between 5 tenants, we were provided with 1 front door key, meaning that 4 did not have access to the property. The extra keys were then posted through the door of the house meaning that the one person with the key had the responsibility to post them out. Essentially, we all lost about 2 weeks rent as the house cound not be accessed.There was vomit on the walls, no toilet seat, no lock on the bathroom door, mould everywhere, a severe water leak, broken sofas - the list goes on. Throughout my year at the porperty, I spend hundreds of pounds and hours and hours of cleaning to make the property habitable. A large chunk of my deposit was still deducted for issues that were not caused by me or the tenants that lived with me. The house was certainly in a better state when we left it than when we moved in. I feel that, as we were students, we were treated like scum by the company as a whole. They attempted to perform viewings without giving notice. Emails were not sent or not recieved. I recieved emails that were intended for other properties - complete breach of data protection. I moved out of the property mid August 2019 and recieved an email today (19/09/2019) asking to schedual a contractor visit. I DON'T EVEN LIVE THERE ANYMORE! I honestly hope that no one, especially students, have the same issues that I have had with this company.

Poor communication and customer service. Dealings at end of tenancy were at times condescending and dishonest. Would not recommend based on our experience.

Abbie has been great and answered all my questions as soon as she possibly could! Couldn’t have been more helpful! The person showing us around the flat was fantastic and really down to earth and honest about the property unlike other estate agents I have previously viewed houses with in Southampton.
If you’re a student 100% recommend hunters they’re great better than the likes of smart homes or posh pads for sure!

Everything was carried out promptly, efficiently and professionally.
My only regret was that care was not taken with making the apartment fit for viewing or advising me (seller) that the property would fetch a better price if some areas were cleaned up.

Absolutely lovely people. Helped us every step of the way! They took our details and sent us direct emails with properties we might be interested in. They were quick to book viewings, process offers and we were notified of everthing that was happening as it did. As relatively new tenants it really put my mind at ease knowing we weren't being taken advantage of! Abbie was especially helpful in organising references and talking to the landlord. Definitely using them again if need be.

I had a great and successful experience of renting a nice flat through hunters, as international tenant the process usually takes longer time than usual but it only took 2 working days which was brilliant and I’m really glad about it!! hunters team were all professional from the beginning, arranging the viewing, suggested flats and tenancy process, Many thanks and appreciations to Abbie who professionally handled the whole process and overcame all the struggles we faced , explained clearly all the possible solutions and dedicated a lot of her time and did her best to finalize the tenancy agreement the soonest by working extra time out of the working hours, the system of the maintenance looks easy, time-saving and convenient to use????????

James who we viewed the property with was very polite and patient which made it a lot easier for us especially when it was our first time renting.

Excellent customer experience from start to finish within letting process .I personally had IT challenges to complete process and Abbie Llewellyn Assistant Property Manager invited me into the branch and assisted me to complete process which was fantastic.

The best and most efficient housing agency I came across!
The viewing went smoothly, the agent was very pleasant and professional, and answered all of our questions.
Once we decided to go for the property, the referencing process was really quick and most of it was online, and all parties were reminded if they still needed to do anything, which was helpful.
Once we paid our deposits, in less than 24 hours I got notification from Tenancy Deposit Scheme, saying our deposit has been registered.
The whole process, from viewing to having our references checked and getting tenancy signed, took about 2 weeks.
After previous bad experiences with letting agencies, I am very impressed with Hunters, well done!

Having worked in the industry myself for many years I consider that I am a customer that could potentially be difficult to please as I have very high expectations on how customer service should be from the start of a process right the way through to completion.
I felt compelled to share my experience of the service received from all the team at Hunters in Southampton as they were simply fantastic.
From the initial viewing of the house with James King, to the process of liaising contracts and move in details with Abbie Llewellyn and Anam Tahir, the consistent communication and attention to my requirements were faultless.
My circumstances of having to move from owning my own property to a rental was stressful enough, but with the help of all the team at this branch, they made the process much easier to cope with and I thank them all for their kindness.
Jonathan Clegg the branch manager took the time to address me each time I walked in to the office even though he had not dealt with me personally and the team should be congratulated for the way they all work so well together.

NOT RECOMMENDED - AVOID THIS AGENCY. Too expensive for the service you get. A bunch of incompetent staff. Terrible customer service with arrogance. Horrible customer service ! Just awful!. I've never seen a service as bad as this. Defo avoid it!

I'm in a fairly helpful position to be able to recommend Hunters.
Initially I engaged three agents to value my property and to be honest each seemed fairly compelling in their own way and gave the property a similar valuation so there wasn't much to choose. I was going to go with Hunters but they seemed much of a muchness.
Subsequently another agent was strongly recommended to me and so I informed Hunters that due to that I would use that other agency. Hunters were very reasonable and offered a duel agency at the same rates and (correctly) predicted the other agent would be happy with that. This put me in a perfect position to compare performance and they were chalk and cheese.
From the off and all the way through Hunters were personable, professional, experienced and very helpful. The other agents didn't seem to be any of those things! Hunters would pro-actively call me to keep me in the loop, even if there wasn't much to report, while the others needed chasing to find out anything.
Due to a much better listing (of the same property at same price) Hunters generated far more viewings and interest.
Long story but the property came off the market for a while and when I put it back on I was happy just to go single agency with Hunters as I believed they had earned the commission far more than the others. Eventually we did get a sale and I was grateful that they stuck with it and offered the same level of service and self-less advice even when it looked like there wouldn't be much in it for them.
When it came to the legal side they provided three conveyencing quotes, Hunters' in-house (but farmed out to an internet conveyencer) was the most competitive. I was skeptical about using them and that they may be recommended due to the kick-back to Hunters but after a chat with Hunters I went with them and sure enough they were also excellent with my case.
So while I can never know that they are the best agents and sold my house quickest for highest price (although they did acheive a price higher than the mortgage valuation came back at, very frustratingly, so they did okay compared to that!) I can say that they were as good as their word on everything, a pleasure to use, earned their commission and I would certainly recommend them and use them again.

I found the service first class both in terms of letting my property and then the subsequent sale of it. Jonathan offered excellent advice and assistance initially in relation to a potential HMO and then letting the property and was ably assisted by Anam. James then became involved in the sale and handled the transaction swiftly and efficiently to completion. The fees paid throughout were very reasonable for the service provided
