Don’t be fooled into thinking this is the local Cornish company anymore. This is now run from miles away by annother company and they simply don’t care about customer service or know anything about the local area. I’d recommend using one of the local holiday cottages instead... Read more

There's a common theme here that I'll add to. We've previously booked property in Port Isaac through John Bray and had a great stay so when we wanted to go back to PI we booked through them again. We subsequently found out John Bray had been taken over by Sykes. During our stay the roof of the cottage was leaking into the main bedroom. We went to the John Bray office in Port Isaac - it was closed and we were told that the office was hardly ever open. Contact via phone to a human was not possible. The office was never open whilst we were there. After sending a message through the complaints section of the website the response was they couldn't get a roofer and " we hope it's not too bad". We received a follow up e mail asking if we were happy with their response!!!... Read more

John bray recently been taken over by Sykes, impossible to get hold of an actual human to talk to to resolve an issue of left lost property. Have been put on hold for hours, emails not answered and only a chat bot to reply to me on fb messenger or chat! Such a shame service so utterly poor as the house we stayed in a few weeks ago was lovely, we probably won’t be using them again... Read more

Do not use John Bray/Sykes Holidays and do not stay at Lowenna Manor 3 (Rock). I arrived at Lowenna Manor 3 for a one week stay. Upon arriving I expect to find the property clean and tidy. However, this was not the case and the I found the following in the property: - Spiders nest, cobwebs and dust throughout the property - Unclean and unhygienic cupboards (crumbs left and an unpleasant smell) with an unclean hob - Fridge smelt like bleach unsuitable for fresh food - Hair and grime in the bathroom - Dirt stains, bloodstains and hairs on the bedsheets - Dirt/dead insects behind the bed and sofa I immediately contacted John Bray/Sykes Holiday Cottages who refused to help me that evening so I had to book a hotel for the night. John Bray called me the following morning and insisted the property had been cleaned (despite sending them photos) and offered for the property to be cleaned again. Due to the state of the property when I arrived I informed them that we have cancelled the let, will not be returning to the property and will seek our own alternative accommodation. I explained that as a minimum I expect a full refund of the holiday let along with compensation for the inconvenience of the extra costs incurred due to no alternative suitable accommodation being provided for that night. After a number of phone calls with Chrstian and his very bad attitude, I was offered £110 compensation and no further assistance. Christan threatened to withdraw the compensation if I wanted to seek a full refund. I was more than happy to refuse his ‘generous compensation offer’ because I understood the terms of the contract I had booked under and the Consumer Rights Act. I suggest that Christian familiarises himself with his own terms and conditions as he did not know the following clause existed until I read this out to him: In accordance with Paragraph 8.1.4 of the T&Cs, ‘it is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that the Property is properly maintained, clean, tidy and in good repair at the start of the holiday.’ This clause of the contract was not met. In accordance with Paragraph 11.1, I have ‘the right to immediately end a Rental Contract if the owner breaches its obligations within the T&Cs’. As the owner breached its obligations within this Paragraph 8.1 and in accordance with Paragraph 11.2 of the T&Cs I will receive the refund no later than 14 days of notification of the end of the rental contract. After educating Christian about these terms and conditions he then escalated this to Sykes Holidays. Sykes continued to refuse any refund for the holiday and refused to confirm if they had taken this matter up with the owner. I raised this case with the lawyers and my bank who ruled in my favour and I was refunded the total amount for the property which I was unable to stay in. If you are looking for a stay in Rock or the surrounding areas I suggest you use an alternative local letting agency who manage all properties locally. We ended up staying at the St Mortiz who were more than happy to help and could not believe the service (or lack of!) we had received from John Bray. I am thankful that the case was ruled in my favor and I received all of my money back. But a note to all - just don't book with John Bray or Sykes Holidays!... Read more

Awful service to loyal customers. Avoid at all costs. Since being taken over by Sykes service has plummeted. Had been booking same property in Cornwall for many years; when we were trying to rebook told that it was no longer on their books as it was being sold. Paid a big deposit on an another of their properties only to then find out quickly that our preferred property was on a rental through another nearby agency. Absolutely no give on refund ( and we're talking over 6 months before the holiday). Loyal customers for 30 years! Shoddy responses to our issues and often not responding when promised. What used to be a local agency who knew everything about the local area is now controlled by an agency 200 miles away who have little local knowledge. Fortunately we have found other agents in the local area who are much more service orientated and are staffed by locals who have a much better knowledge... Read more

Terrible service, do not use. Arrived at property to find no bed linen and towels provided. Nowhere did it state this in the description of the property. We were told it wasn't their responsibility to provide us with bed linen and to "go to Tesco to buy our own bedding". Staff were unhelpful and couldn't care less about customers not being comfortable in their property. Ended up having to sleep on bare beds which is incredibly unhygienic and not exceptable for the price we paid. As well as this, general cleanliness of the property was incredibly poor, crusty food still on cutlery and plates and generally dusty and unkept.... Read more

We have just returned from spending 4 nights in Maylands in Port Gaverne. On arrival the house was very cold and felt damp. We noticed that the night storage heating had not be turned on, which as one knows takes a long time to heat up. Fortunately I rang office and a charming man turned up with 2 electric heaters. There was only one bedside light in double room and single room with light bulbs not working and ceiling light not working in bedroom. Also two light bulbs in kitchen were not working. Again had to speak to office and the bulbs were then replaced. The sitting room carpet is really dirty as are the sofas and armchairs. The lawn quite honestly looked liked a field. Grass had not be cut for a long time. Even the field over the fence grass was shorter! It does not take a lot of common sense for John Bray to have checked the house out before our arrival. Such simple points but to us very important and am not impressed. Would be a good idea to wake up and try harder.... Read more

Formerly superb when privately owned, now sold to Sykes Holiday Cottages and the service is frankly awful. No longer locally run, the staff aren't familiar with the local area at all (moved to a call centre in Chester). We have booked 3 places through them and the first two experiences were extremely poor. Our third booking for Christmas week 2022 has just been cancelled several months after making the booking. We received an email notification and when we rang up they couldn't tell us why it had been cancelled, we have subsequently been told the owners are refurbishing the house which seems odd as it is fully modernised. A shame that a great local business has been ruined. Won't be using John Bray's holidays again.... Read more

I booked a holiday cottage for dates I can no longer use due to a mix up with school holiday dates. I cannot rebook to 2023 as there is no availability nor can I convert my week into a weekend as that is not something they will offer. I will therefore lose my deposit of over £1000 despite the fact that they will be able to relet this very popular house. It seems money grabbing and unhelpful to me.... Read more

After using this company at least twice a year for the past 10-15 years we are sadly not booking with them this summer. The service since they have moved over to Sykes has deteriorated and on top of this the cost this summer for properties is extortionate. We would normally rent properties for approximately £850 at the end of July and they have risen to over £2,500 per week. So sad not to be able to return to Port Isaac this year for the first time in many years.... Read more

Since this company has been taken over by Sykes Holiday Cottages it has gone massively downhill. They cancel accommodation with no compensation or customer service response and disregard long term John Bray customers. Avoid at all costs and I suggest property owners who had their houses with John Bray should look elsewhere. After 30 years, I won't be booking with John Bray (aka Sykes) again and I suspect I won't be the only one.... Read more

We had a 2 week holiday booked at Windlass in August. We arrived and the property is lovely and it is in a great location. After the 1st night we spoke with John Bray Cottages to say that 2 of the single beds has terrible mattresses and needed replacing, also, on the stairs there were some nails or carpet tacs that were sticking up and had already cut the feet of 2 children and 1 adult. These are both logged and as soon as the maintenance team were back on Monday they would get this resolved - which they did. Although in replacing the mattresses, 1 of them had the mattress cover taken, we did ask for another, we were told one would be sent down, but it never arrived. A few days in I was contacted by one of the team at John Bray and asked if we wanted a linen change on Friday (this would be normal change over day) to which I replied we would and I asked if we needed to strip beds etc - I was told yes. Friday came we were going out for the day, so we stripped all beds, put then into linen bags provided with towels, a large linen bag was dropped off and we were told they would return to pick up dirty linen - we then went out for the day. We arrived back at around 6pm to find we had been left with just towels, no bed linen. Panic set in as it was already 6pm, so I called the office number and eventually got through to someone at Sykes who logged the problem, I said we have 4 children, 2 of them very young that would need to go to bed within the next hours and half, so we would need linen by then, I was told this is ok they will pass information on. After an hour we had heard nothing, a follow up call to the number was made, I had chosen the in cottage emergency option, left a message but heard nothing, an email to the original person who had contacted me about the linen change was sent, another telephone call and message left and a strongly worded complaint email to Johnbrayletting, the kids ended up going to bed late waiting for some linen to be delivered - suffice to say that we heard NOTHING, everyone has to go to bed with no bed linen. The next morning I had an email from the lady who had originally contacted us about the linen change, asking if the situation had been resolved to which I responded no, a very vague sort of an apology was offered over email and assurance this would get sorted. I had no follow up from calls made to the emergency line, email sent to Jobnbraylettings or from Sykes who I had originally spoken with on Friday evening. Eventually 1 of our party called John Bray to complain and was told someone would come back to us. We were now waiting around on Saturday for linen to be delivered (& the mattress cover that had never been delivered from earlier in the week) half the day gone and eventually it arrived - we now had to make the beds, then could go out. We again heard nothing from more from John Bray - I called once more and spoke with someone at the Rock office who seemed like she was going to take control if the situation and assured me I would have an email by the next day once she had investigated what had gone wrong - unsurprisingly, we heard nothing. We contacted John Bray on 2 more occasions while we were away (they had nothing logged on our booking, which is ridiculous) but again no follow up. I called again when we got home, I spoke with someone who gave me complaint reference number who told me she was taking ownership for the issue and I would hear something over the next couple of days - can you guess what happened next? - yep, nothing! Once more I emailed, told info was being sent to John Bray Complaints team - nothing. The first rule of customer service is to get back to someone if you say you will. I will never book with Sykes Cottages or John Bray again - their customer service is shocking, if I were the owner of a cottage that I asked John Bray/Sykes to manage for me I would be exceedingly unhappy with the service that I was paying them to deliver.... I rented the same property from this company three years in a row. The property became slightly more shabby each time. I reported an issue with a loose tile over our bedroom window on my second visit, which lifted and banged when the wind picked up. but it wasn't sorted during my stay. Some of the chairs in the dining are were losing their covering. Two were quite wobbly. On my third visit, the same loose tile was still banging away at night, sometimes making sleep virtually impossible. The chairs hadn't improved. There were 7 downlights in the kitchen area. Only 4 of them worked. I told Bray's two days into my stay. They didn't replace any of the lights. I considered renting the property again and contacted them, asking if the previous issues had been resolved. They didn't bother responding. I get the impression that because the property is in a good location in Port Isaac, it is taken for granted that it will rent out.... Read more

Properties have always been beautifully clean and the staff are very welcoming ...would never go anywhere else.... Read more
