I didn't eat here but we came to have a drink only.
The selection of gins was great and the girl that served us was excellent. But this is no 'gon bar' to go and just drink, it is more so to drink whilst you eat. There is only one table for drinks and it is outside of the kitchen, toilets and back rooms. It felt like we were part of the staff room with the kitchen open and it wasn't a comfortable atmosphere for us.
The restaurant area looked lovely though, but certainly don't come here for just drinks

Had such a disappointing visit to this place tonight. We have had such beautiful experiences at this restaurant before but tonight the food was subpar. We discreetly asked for the bill willing to leave without making a fuss but the waiting staff wanted to make such an issue of the fact that we were dissatisfied with the food that was served to us. Such a shame that this place let us down after so many great times. Good luck to this restaurant in the future, you will need it if you are to treat and serve the food we experience tonight.

1st time visiting during Covid so review based on current climate. Menu was slightly on the basic side. Dishes tasted amazing although slightly bland looking. Small inside but cosy and huge variety of gins and flavoured tonics. Staff were great ????all covid regs adhered to.

Have been several times for different reasons and each time it's been a delightful experience. The staff are lovely, helpful and knowledgeable. The food is delicious and good portion sizes all reasonably costed.

We ordered delivery food for the first time and it didn't disappoint. We have visited the Monkey Tree a few times and due to the current situation we thought we would give it a try. All food was excellent, just like being in the actual restaurant. We do recommend to try this new service from them.

Visited here for a valentines meal with my wife. The food was fantastic! Best place I’ve eaten in Ashby. The Monkey Tree didn’t cram everyone in like some other places in valentines and the prices were really good. Will definitely visit here again.

3rd visit what an awful evening. Food was dreadful fish batter tasted terrible chips were soggy 3 of us had this and left most of it. Salted Caramel Brulee tasted of coffee and Chocolate Brownie was cold and tasteless and after complaining the lady in charge came to the table and asked if there was a problem she was abrupt and rude and stated they serve the Brownie cold no apology given though they didnt charge for it. Terrible service from all staff very rushed and difficulty getting drinks order right though the best part of the evening was the Gin. Definitely won't be returning.

I recently visited The Monkey Tree for my birthday celebrations, I was really looking forward to this as I had booked Gin Afternoon Tea for 11 people. When I booked this afternoon tea, I paid a deposit for 11 people (£55), when booking this I said I was unsure as to whether it would be for 9 or 11 people, however I was told if I paid a deposit for 11 people and not all were able to come, I could carry partial payment over to take it off the bill, rather than loosing my deposit. Unfortunately this turned out to be untrue! We arrived at the Monkey Tree for our afternoon tea, we were sat at our table and the on shift manager came over, I said to her that unfortunately 2 members of our party couldn't come last minute, like I had said when I booked that that might have been the case, I told her what I was told in terms of the deposit, to which she abruptly responded saying no this is not the case, that is wrong, you will have to pay the full £15 per person regardless, I was not happy that I was having to then fork out £30 when I was told that I would not have too. There was no apology or kind words in response to this, which I found very rude. In terms of afternoon tea, it was ok, only ok, nothing special. The service was poor, we was left to our own devices completely, not checked up on or asked if everything was okay which I found particularly rude as we was a big group, who had booked and was obviously spending a lot of money. Overall the staff were abrupt, and rude and the whole atmosphere felt awkward, we had to wave for attention to ask for drinks and for the bill. A smile goes a long way! Furthermore, we found a hair moulded into one of the cake pops on the dessert board, we complained about this but the member of staff did not seem interested. I felt really annoyed by this whole afternoon as it felt as though the staff were not bothered whether we had a good time or a bad time, as they were getting our money regardless. We had just finished our afternoon tea, and ordered another round of drinks, the member of staff then came over to the table and said we had 30 mins to leave as they needed the table, it felt as though we was being rushed out! When we recieved the bill we noticed a charge for £9, we was confused what this was for- so we asked, she responded saying the £9 was for the dashes of lemonade in our gin, so each gin was being charged £1 more for a small dash of lemonade, there was nothing to say anywhere that this would be the case, to me that just seemed a little bit extreme charging £1 per dash. I can definitely say we wont be returning.

Down a lane across from the public library carpark.
Great choice of gin. They are not gin snobs. They just enjoy drinking it.
Food was basic and nice. Nothing fancy.
Service was less to be desired.
Room was full and we felt left to your own devices. In some respects that was good as we chatted away but in others there was no interaction with staff. And smiles go a long way.
Would we go back again, probably not.
Not the experience we had in mind.
Nothing jumped out to make it memorable. Apart from the wallpaper.
It needs more smiles. ????

Amazing food and service. I am vegan and asked them what options they had for me, they were so helpful and even created a few new menu items for me to choose from. They said they're thinking of creating a vegan menu and I would love that as my vegan breakfast burrito was 10/10. Lovely atmosphere for champagne brunch catch up and loads of good gins too!

Great selection of gins and food was ok. However, had a dispute about the bill and have honestly never experienced anything like it.
We were a group of mature adults trying to politely and calmly explain the issue and suddenly felt like we were on a playground.
The male waiter was lovely but the female waitress and the manager/owner were beyond rude.
In the end we were so disgusted with how we were being spoken to that we paid far over what we should have because our evening was ruined and we just wanted to go home.
Really wish we'd just gone to Ask Italian down the road. We'd even seen poor reviews of this place saying "food was fine but service was shocking" and thought it was probably just a blip. It wasn't.
Would never recommend to anyone, ever.

We fancied somewhere different so as a group of six, we booked for an evening meal. This is a small place with a very nice staff to serve you. The chairs were so comfy and it’s pleasant inside. To start I had the asparagus with Parma ham and poached egg which was very nice and then the fish and chips with mushy peas for the main- which was nice but the portions could have been larger for the price you pay. The dessert was ok, I had the marshmallow brownie and to be honest I did not find it that nice, the brownie lacked flavour and I don’t think the marshmallow went well with it (a layer on top of the brownie). We had three drinks each and everyone had at least two courses and the bill was £40 per head. This restaurant is in an alley way so you have to look for it. Not excellent but nice enough for me.

This is a great local eatery and gin emporium! Always friendly staff, great selection of gin brands and mixes to try and plenty of space to eat and relax in comfortable surroundings. Do not leave Ashby without visiting!

Today, I went to have afternoon tea, which had been booked on 14th November 2018. I had got a voucher for my birthday from my work colleagues that was valid for a year. I took a girlfriend with me for the treat. When we arrived I asked the barman (front of house) whether he needed the voucher and he said no I’ll take it when you pay. The gins were very good, the afternoon tea was a little disappointing in content and had obviously been prepared in advance and perhaps the sandwiches hadn’t been covered up as they were dry on the edges and although average, it was palatable. After we had been given our tea, we were not approached again by the waitress and had to get her attention to request further drinks.
When we went to leave and settle the bill, I was told that they couldn’t accept the gift voucher as the business had changed hands and didn’t I know this? How would I know whether a business had changed hands.. I had travelled from Derby!! It’s not local to me.. the barman said it had changed hands in October.. the voucher I had was valid for a year from August.. there’s three things here that they should have put in place. When the booking was made by telephone, they should have asked when the voucher was purchased and explained the situation. Secondly the front of house barman should have checked the voucher when I offered it on arrival and could have explained the situation and I could have made an informed decision about staying and thirdly, they should have a sign explaining that any vouchers dated a year from when the business changed hands would not be upheld.. I was left standing there very upset as my afternoon had been ruined and I was embarrassed in front of my friend and then had to pay the bill in full!! The front of house manager then stated that it wasn’t their fault (the new owners) and he hoped it hadn’t spoilt the afternoon. I certainly won’t be returning.. not only was I disappointed in the actual tea, I was very upset about how it was handled and left there crying and angry in frustration. Very poor..

Lovely place! Over 200 different Gins = Happy wife! Only 4 stars as they were out of a few things. Lovely friendly staff. A great way to try before you buy a specific gin.

Nice place. We all really enjoyed the food. The staff.... hmmm... not quite sure, can't put my finger on it... did their job OK... friendly enough not very welcoming and when serving plates and drinks just barging through us and across us. The same when clearing... barging in between people chatting, with not much 'excuse me's'.... But having said that we all had a good evening.

A great place to go for a very friendly atmosphere with a vast selection of gin and flavoured tonic that can be recommended to suit one's pallet.
The food is highly recommended and the gravey on the Sunday dinner is to die for!

This was a surprise from my friend for my birthday. A little shocked we had to pay an extra £2 per gin for tonic or lemonade on top of the £4.50 per glass! The afternoon tea was ridiculous at best it was 2 slices of bread ( I'm being generous) cut into 8. Some food was forgotten and brought out later.

Visited on 21 July 2018 for lunch.charming place in little alley from main road.Lovely and tasty food with excellent price, fixed price lunch menu 1 course £6.95 2 course £9.95 or 3 course £11.95. Variety choices of drinks. If you live locally or passing by I would recommended.

After reading positive reviews we decided to try this place for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. The staff were super friendly and helpful, happy to accommodate our 3 children and the food was incredible. We will definitely be returning

I've been here 3 times now with work colleagues and this place is really lovely. The food is very scrumptious and the early bird is excellent value plus I LOVE the gorgeous leather chairs. To top it all off, the staff are friendly and helpful but unobtrusive. A firm favourite.

We visited as a party of 6 in March, 4 who really enjoy their gin and a couple that don't. Service was very good, all the staff are very polite and friendly and the barman is very knowledgeable about the gins they serve. Food was lovely. We had a couple of people that wanted a certain meal but without an ingredient which was catered for without a problem. Will certainly be returning. Highly recommended and good value for good quality.

Really nice meal and very good ambience. We chose the night when the snow came (even though it wasn’t snowing when we arrived). By the end of our meal all taxis had stopped running. Up stepped Claire (the manager) to be the hero of the hour. She got us into her car and we slipped and slid back to our village. True customer service literally going the extra mile!! Thanks Claire we will definitely be returning and recommending you.

Food was ok, but found the overall experience disappointing. I found a few of the staff a bit insulting to myself and guests. Given the very poor Food Hygiene rating recently published I would suggest to anyone to rethink? They just dont seem to care.

Excellent for lunch .. very good food .. good sized portions and reasonable prices.
Fast service and polite staff.
Good value for money and great selections of gin.
Only negative would be the toilets .. no hand towel and very small.

Shared an excellent meal here with friends, starter and main were particularly good. Dessert (cheese board in my case) was a little weak with an average selection.
If I was to be picky and by way of feedback I'd like to see more modern presentation and nicer plates used, it was a little 90's with the salad garnishes and swirls of sauce. More elegant plates would certainly help.
Gin cocktails were great value at £4.50 and the bar man showed good knowledge and an ability to react to preference.
Service was swift and of good quality.
We'll be going back for more, a solid 4/5.
