First time buyers beware. Here's my experience with Connells of Yeovil. Being first time buyers, my partner and I dealt with practically every estate agent on the highstreet. Connell were advertising a property that we were really interested in. We followed up our interest with 3 viewings booked within a week or so. First viewing, a trainee attended having come back off holiday, and had not seen the property nor could give any additional information. Second viewing, same situation, different young man. Third viewing, we were expecting the sales manager James to be present, so we could open up a serious conversation, to only end up with the same previous two situations. I was surprised that after each of our visits, the sales manager did not follow up with a phone call to discuss our thoughts and feelings. Despite this, and after some consideration, we decided that we would make a sensible offer to open up negotiations. The asking price on the property was clearly over valued for the area and general condition, but we made an offer that was fair and arguably still over the correct validation. Our offer was swifty rejected, with no further discussions or questions being put forward, with the exception of, "what is your maximum budget?". I found this wildly inappropriate and unprofessional, it appeared as if James was attempting to back us into a corner to bully us into digging deeper into our pockets. With no other discussions to take place, I tabled our offer and did not recieve any further communication. It makes me question whether our offer was ever formally handed over to the seller. Either way, between James and/or the seller, they were clearly attempting to capitalise on us as first time buyers. As a result, we counted our loses and moved on. Two weeks later we found a perfect home for our family and we're very pleased nothing else materialised with Connells. Ironically, the property that we made the offer on, soon had its asking price reduced below our original offer. It has now sold for potentially 15K less than what we offered. I will say, I did have a sit down with the branch mortgage consultant and she came across as highly efficient, proactive and professional. The sales team is clearly run by someone who has an enormous ego with children for colleagues. At the end of the day, extra commission for the branch has been lost, we were let down as keen prospect buyers and the vendor selling the property has also (probably unknowingly) been let down by the branch. Recommending this sales team to anyone would frankly be amoral.... Read more
