Having lived in my large centrally located apartment in central St Albans for over 10 years, I thought the time had come to explore the possibility of renting it and moving slightly out of 'town' to a smaller apartment as a tenant. (I put some stuff into storage - all part of a cunning plan). From the moment I first walked into the branch at the end of July, I experienced an exceptional level of service from everyone I have communicated with particularly from Samuel Jeffries, the Lettings Manager, whose communication and knowledge relating to me becoming both a landlord and a tenant has been second to none. Importantly for me, Samuel obviously shared my philosophy of treating people fairly and proportionately. We have rented our property with Northwood (formally Jordans) since 2008 and we cannot recommend them more highly. Under Tim's guidance his team have provided a first-class service, responsive, professional and value for money. I can only add to my long term experience: (August 2024) a rather costly maintenance issue arose however with some judicious investigation by Chanel (Maintenance) she was able to identify that the product was still under guarantee and was repaired without cost. That sums up the effectiveness of the Northwood organisation. Thank you Chanel!

I've known Northwoods both for their lettings and sales teams. I've not got much to comment on the lettings side, it's just fine.
Callum from the sales team however has been great to work with - he's very responsive and quick to act, which is so important in a challenge such as buying a first home. When I made my offer for the flat, he handled this so quickly that my offer was accepted on the same day and the process kickstarted from there. He's a great case manager and point of contact between the seller and me. He was also very efficient in arranging for the removal of items I did not want to keep in the flat. In a tedious and relatively stressful process, Callum was always someone I could count on for quick response or action. Great job!

TLDR: Agent misled us on the phone about the property allowing pets, and messed up the time of the viewing which led to wasting around 3-4 hours of our weekend and some more for our family members. I’d rather set a tent up in a nearby park than deal with these people again, at least I know what I’m getting.
My partner and I were looking for a pet friendly property in the surrounding areas, and due to the nature of our work we had to get assistance from some family members in calling up agents and confirming whether the properties allowed pets. We found a property we didn’t mind the look of and got one of our family to call up, ask about pets and depending on the answer arrange a viewing. On this call the agent was made aware that we had 2 pets, and promptly and enthusiastically confirmed that pets were allowed in the property and it would not be a problem. They had also mentioned that there was another couple with pets viewing the property so naturally we thought this might be the one.
Upon this information we booked a viewing which the agent confirmed was at 1:40 on the weekend and were chuffed with this, however prior to this we received text confirmation that the viewing was at 11:40. Weird, we thought, but then made the plan to arrive in st albans slightly early, go for some breakfast, and then view the property.
On the morning of the viewing, we arrived in st albans and on the way to our breakfast spot we got a call from the estate agents. The agent then told us that it was actually 1:40 and that they had made a mistake sending the message in the morning. This naturally annoyed us as we were already in the town at ~10am and had to spend the rest of the day finding things to do.
We decided to stick with the viewing time due to the difficulty in finding pet friendly properties, but ended up heading to the property early as we had difficulty in finding things to do without making the plans for that. Upon arriving at the property and to the person’s credit - they allowed us to come in early and were apologetic of the mistake in the scheduling. We viewed the property and it was pretty nice - new, clean and a decent amount of space (although this has nothing to do with the agents themselves). Just before leaving my partner asked the lady who was showing us around to confirm that pets were allowed and as soon as we mentioned that she looked flabbergasted, and gave us the answer that she doesn’t have the information to hand and that we should (again) call the agents to confirm this. We got back in the car and lo and behold - the agent now confirmed that this property was 100% NOT pet friendly.
Credit to the lady showing us around in all honesty, but overall an absolute waste of effort, time and unnecessary stress that could have all been avoided if the people in the office were honest with us. Just hope that other couple cancelled before being disappointed like we were.

Things had changed considerably over this time, so we are thankful for them being patient with us, and for the quick onboarding process. I was trying to get everything in order before going away but no one would do anything.
I was ready to pay and sign everything so that I could enjoy a week off before a stressful move.
But that was wishful thinking.
As soon as I flew out I was bombarded with emails requesting paperwork to be signed, etc...
On top of that I was told the carpet of the new property didn't need professional cleaning as it was new, surprise surprise, the day we moved in we found out not only that the carpet wasn't new but that the previous owner had a cat.
The stench was and still is unbearable not to mention my partner is allergic to cats.
I now need to fork out more money to change the carpet in a house that is not mine.
Very disappointed with this agency, it's been a constant let down from start to finish.
I'll never use them again that's for sure.

I had the best experience recently whilst trying to rent my own place in St Albans. I met one of the agents Lenka on my first viewing, and she was so knowledgable of the property and the area and had such a professional manner. But she was also very kind and friendly and I felt I could trust her straight away. I then went on to have some more viewings, but eventually had my last viewing with Lenka again at what is now my new home! It’s the absolute perfect fit for me and I’m so happy. It was quite a quick turnaround from my offer being accepted to my move in date, but Lenka handled everything like it was effortless and kept me completely in the loop. The day I moved in I was so happy as it’s the first time I’ve moved into a new rented home where there were no issues at all - nothing needed fixing, everything was clean, I had all the keys and information I needed. This is not the first time I'm renting a flat in the UK and my experience so far was very disappointing: before you pay the agents are very helpful and sympathetic, but right after they disappear completely.
With the Northwood I had a completely different experience: the viewing was right on time, the agent answered all our questions, we put an offer right away and in a couple of days the agent (Lenka) came back to us and told us that our offer was accepted.
All the paperwork was done, all questions answered before the check in. The check in was done on a very professional level: everything was explained, the tour was made. Even very nice little detail: the check in report is online app where you can upload your photos and comments.

We live overseas and selected Northwoods to be our full management agency for a 3 Year period, they were superlative in ensuring the tenants were looked after and we were consulted on every small detail that required repair or replacement. We then decided to sell our house, were well advised by Northwoods on market value and received the right offer within a couple of weeks. Alex was profesional and reassuring during the whole process, there were a few hiccups along the way with the buyers not least exit of Liz Truss and soaring mortgage deals, but Alex kept a firm handle on the process and we completed a couple of months after the tenants moved out.

Had a viewing for a property in St Albans, the agent Lenka(Lettings negotiator) who was supposed to show us the property came late, I had to call agency to check where is she.
She was completely clueless about the property, she was not even aware of the asking rent, if the the furniture was staying or going.
After viewing I showed interest in putting the deposit, she told me that she has others viewings as well. I told her that I'll offer more than other offers she'll receive.
She called next day and told me that the furniture is staying and they have an offer more than mine, but my income was more than theirs and that I'll probably get it.
After the weekend she emailed me that the landlord has accepted other offer, she didn't gave me any reason, I asked her what the reason of rejection but she didn't gave any answers to which I believe I have been discriminated.

I experienced an issue with electricity and had to stay without it and gas for half of a day and Elizabeth from Noorthwood did really help me out by trying to call British gas and escalade my case. She even call me back once she got more informations to explain me what I had to do.
If it was only for her I would give 5 stars. The rest of the agency seems to not know a lot about there properties unfortunately. Nobody were able to tell me where was my meter box and they failed to let us know about the electricity situation as well.
That would be the only down part, other then that, they are really nice when you are calling them, and always answer fast to the emails.

There is something to be said for businesses who pick up the phone and speak to you. As great as email is, more often than not, speaking to a someone often resolves things much faster.
Kerry was my key point of contact at Northwood St Albans near the end of my tenancy. During my time there I had to report a number of issues. When Kerry came on board to support me, she was so easy to work with, she took the time to listen, followed through on what she'd say she'd do and cleared matters up when one of her colleagues overlooked some key agreements. It was just a pleasure being able to have a consistent point of contact that has a familiarity and history of the property I was staying in.

Spoke to Tariq says he’s the office manager. The Gentleman has no phone manner or empathy towards clients. His was very harsh and abrupt. When explaining dual applicant having had a stroke former MP. She showed no regard for the person or their previous experience. He then went on to shout saying he did not need to give he’s full name. As I tried to give brief examples of job role he cut me off and said he didn’t need to know. If he had looked at the name he would have had a clue to what food production engineer stood for. Please handle these agents with caution. To say the least. Will be contacting trading standards.

Very disappointed with the service, my and my wife had viewing property in Conley Heath, we decided to take the property on the spot and we let the agent know that we would like to pay the holding deposit straight way so that he can cancel the other viewing. He was hesitant and continued with other viewing which was shocking. I contacted him several times about the property, eventually our offer was declined without giving any reason. Agent mentioned on his email there wasn't any specific reason. Me and my wife earn over 40k per annum, paying £795 rent isn't an issue for us. If you picky about who you are going to rent the property please don't give us viewing appointment and waste our time. I would give them zero rating for not treating us fairly

I was a first time buyer looking for a property in the area and David Lees was a fantastic estate agent right the way through from viewing to completion (and even after). David and the team conducted themselves professionally throughout the transaction and were transparent and courteous with all dealings we had with them. Amazingly, David was also reachable when he was on holiday and continued to progress matters whilst abroad. I also feel Northwood were the main driving force keeping the momentum going so we could complete as quickly as possible even when solicitors and other parties were dragging their heels. We had previously let out our flat through Northwoods and had received exceptional service from Tim. When we decided to sell, although we got several quotes from various estate agents Tim and David at Northwoods were the most professional and knowledgeable. From the outset the experience of dealing with Northwoods was excellent. The professional pictures of our flat were brilliant and far better than those we received when we put our flat on the market a year earlier with a different estate agent. Viewings were managed very well and were arranged with minimal inconvenience for our tenants. David was our main contact for the sales process and we could rely on him to keep us up to date, always be available for advice and to help progress the sale. He went over and above what was required of him and we would honestly never have got to completion when we did without his help. His expertise in dealing with our incredibly unhelpful solicitor was invaluable! I would not hesitate to recommend Tim and David to anyone and will definitely use them again if we ever have another property in St Albans.

The guys at Northwood have been great. From the point where we took the property to the day we moved out. During our time at the flat, we had a big water leak from the flat upstairs and Northwood went out of their way to get things sorted. Good humoured, efficient and a pleasure to deal with!

We rented a property in Frogmore from Northwood from July 2013 - July 14. They could not read inventories nor could they understand contracts.
In one of their inspections we were told that we had too many belongings for them to inspect the house. We were also criticised for staining the work surfaces in the kitchens. The stains in question were on the wooden boards I own and which were out in the kitchen sides. They would not retract their statements even when sent evidence of these boards.
Our landlady decided that she wanted to move back in before the end of our contract and we had to explain to the agent that this was not possible due to the terms upon which all parties had agreed.
The landlady entered without permission or with mere minutes notice, caused damage when she was in the property which she then tried to pin on us as tenants and caused undue stress and upset.
After endless 'phone calls and emails we had a meeting with the manager of the company to try and placate us. We were mollified for a short while, however the further actions of the company showed how they really considered their tenants.
When it came to handing the property back, we had vacated a week before the end of the contract. I arrived at the property half an hour before the arranged 'checkout time' to find the agent had entered the property without permission. We still had possession of the house and therefore he either needed our permission to enter in our absence or had to wait for us to arrive.
After leaving the property we had countless emails from the manager of the branch ensuring us that they had contacted the water, gas and electricity boards to inform them of our move and that it was their responsibility to do so. After several weeks of waiting for a final bill I contacted the manager again and again received confirmation that these companies had been contacted. Two months on I contacted the boards myself to be informed that they had received partial information from
Northwood and that we were in fact owed a total of £500 between the various companies due to over payment of bills thanks to the lack of information having been given by the rental company. We also had to continuously call the company to receive payment of our refunded deposit.
The entire process of our rental with Northwood was traumatic and unpleasant and my wife was made physically ill by the process.
We are now sincerely angered by the experience and would advise anyone considering using this agency to avoid them at all costs.

Shocking experience. Arrogant and unhelpful staff. When I called to inquiry about a 2 bedroom property to rent I was told the landlord doesn't allow smokers. I am a non smoker myself, however my friend who is looking to share the property is seeking help from NHS to quit smoking. I was guilty of being honest to the staff about my friend's smoking habit. I asked him to speak to the landlord then let me know if he would be willing to rent the property to us on the basis that my friend won't be smoking. The staff I was speaking to was not interested in listening to me at all. Instead he kept repeating himself like a robot and was quick to discriminate and judge my friend. Not impressed. Won't be using this property agent at all. Stay away!

After accepting a job abroad, I was looking for an agent to rent my property in St Albans. We saw Northwood (previously Jordan's) and Tim came round to the flat to discuss the options. We were impressed by the professionalism and immediate action taken, along with the rates for management. A deal was signed and we experienced over 6 years of excellent service at Northwood. All the staff have been brilliant and the communication is always prompt. Any maintenance issues are dealt with quickly and efficiently and at good rates. I also upgraded to the 'Platinum' arrangement with guaranteed rent for that added comfort and assurance that the mortgage would be covered. If you are looking for a lettings firm, this is the one. First Class.
