This is a review for Northwood York property.
I initially rented a property in York through Northwood York with the intention of staying for a year due to my job placement. Unfortunately, I mistakenly signed a 6-month contract. At the end of this period, the landlord issued an eviction notice, creating a challenging situation for me and my family as we sought a new property.
However, Northwood York's agent, Danielle, and her manager, Chris Ray, were exceptional. They provided unwavering support throughout the transition process, understanding the financial difficulties and even waiving off the notice period.
Although I couldn't secure another rental agreement with them due to the unavailability of my desired property, I deeply appreciate Danielle and Chris Ray for their extraordinary support—a level of service rarely seen from letting agents.

Worst experience of an agency we have ever had. We wrote a very detailed review here of Northwood initially but it was, conveniently for them, removed. Avoid this shambles of an agency at all costs - unhelpful and unprofessional at all levels.

So far so good.
Agents were quick to get things done and communication from them definitely deserves 5 stars, I need to express how smooth and stress free everything was from their side too.
House was exactly as described no hidden horrors, so far everything has been honest and we are enjoying our tenancy.
We have had a bad experience in the past which has made us very hopeful about this company, having not noticed a single red flag yet.
Hopefully there are no issues to come and if we choose to leave, hopefully that procedure will be as smooth as the move-in.
5 stars so far for Northwood!

Helpful initially with quick turnaround and getting us in. Overcharged us for leaving the flat in a cleaner condition than it was found, charged £75 to fit 3 lightbulbs... Only responded to requests for things to be fixed if they immediately could have cause significant harm but made year long excuses as to why other tasks didn't get done throughout the whole tenancy and still weren't completed on us moving out. Also re-rented a fine but significantly ageing property at a ridiculously inflated price from £925pcm in 2021 to £1200pcm in 2022 having no updating work done on it. Better experience with these than Hunter's though!

My wife and I lived in York for just over 3 years. In that time we rented from both agencies and private landlords. Northwood managed the last property we stayed at and I have to say that I have been blown away by their professionalism. The Northwood team were responsive, fast, and always respectful. Chris Ray added a real personal touch and was very helpful whenever we had tricky problems.
To other tenants out there, one benchmark for us is how the checkout process goes. We took good care of the place and Northwood agreed to return the full deposit with no hassle within 24 hours of their taking possession.

Absolute shambles of an estate agents. We were left homeless for 2 weeks because of their incompetence. We finally moved in and the estate agents said there will be no items left in the property. My advice to anyone purchasing with these liars. Do a final check of the property check all the appliances work because we also found out that the oven and hob doesn’t work. So not only was the house a right state, the appliances were broken. I never complain but when somebody takes you for a mug like this it’s hard not to. soon as they get your money they couldn’t give a toss. 0/10

First of all, if I could put no stars, I would!
I rented from Northwoods York for a year, and in that year I had 2 house inspections & got excellent both times...
now I have left the property they have sent a list with 230 attached photos of how “badly” the property has been treated, listing problems that already existed when I first moved in... now they are taking most of my deposit off me for problems that are either general wear and tear, or so minor that you wouldn’t even notice them, they have gone out of there way to find problems. They took a photo of a plant I had left in the back garden, and are charging me for removal.
I would never ever recommend renting from northwoods. Ever!

Recommended Northwood York to my neighbours who were looking for a great estate agent to sell their house with. Their house sold very quickly and when the new family moved in as promised I was paid the quoted recommendation fee. Would recommend this estate agent again to anyone as they always do what they say. The worst and most unprofessional company me and my wife have had the misfortune to deal with. They lied and tried to manipulate us so we decided to walk away from them as a business. It was a very unpleasant experience
My friend also tried to rent a property with them and was discriminated against for being on disability benefits despite being able to provide months of rent up front
Please avoid this business and hope it's toxic and predatory business practices stop plaguing York's high-street

I've had a previous good experience with this estate agent when buying my property, which is why I chose them, but that was a few years ago and the staff have changed. Now, when selling my property, I had to deal with a rude, unhelpful, bullying and condescending person who gave the distinct impression that she was working for the buyer, not me.. My house is sold now but if I had any other need for an estate agent then it would not be with this one.

My experience with Northwood agency has unfortunately not been conclusive.
I have contacted this agency for a 2 bedroom flat as although single, I would like to foster children in the future which is why I went for a 2 bedroom .
The first contact was fine, bubbly actually so it was positive to start with . The maisonette looks good, very central as well so I went for it although specified that foster agents will be asking for a written confirmation from the landlord.
A day or 2 later, Jennifer emails me to let me know that the landlady is happy for me to foster children within her property and that her email should be counted as proof. Following this email I called her letting her know that It wasn't that easy given that social workers can be very fussy when It comes to documents, and were very likely to ask me for a confirmation written by the landlord herself. This information triggered a heavy breath from her indicating me that she was annoyed by this information.
Again , a day or 2 later , I receive another email saying that the landlady is on holiday until the end of the month therefore she will not take the time to write and sign a letter, and that If I wasn't happy with it, to back out of the deal; which would mean they would not refund me leaving me with hundred of pounds lost because they took the time to check references but insisted they will not bother the landlord asking for that letter which once again, is required for social workers to consider that property to be suitable for fostering.
I said that they needed to understand that since I am paying 6 months in advance and committing for at least a year, It was an important investment to me and needed that guarantee as a result which Catrina replied. "People pay 6 months in advance all the time in York" This is nothing new to us"... A very unprofessional response indeed, and completely missing the point.
Positive to start with , but went quickly downhill as soon as I have paid the hundreds of pounds to hold the property. also their tone is quiet rude /condescending to be frank .
I have chosen to go ahead since the owner of the agency said she will keep my money if I back out although will definitely vacate the property as soon as the contract allow it which is in a year . Should have done more research on this agency before contacting them . won't be using again once out of the contract.
From what I can see, they will treat you very well if you are a Landlord since they didn't dare contact her while on holiday. But if you are a tenant, be prepared to face a condescending team if things go wrong instead of them doing their best . In the contrary , they will actually escalate the situation.
Overall experience not conclusive therefore I do not recommend.

They were proactive throughout the sale of our property but there was a few negatives that unfortunately outweighed the positives. A big selling point in relation to the property which was majorly advertised on Rightmove, Zoopla and the Northwood website etc is that the property had a state of the art sound system built in to each room of the house which we very much liked the idea of. Unbeknown to us and something were not made aware that this sound system did not work! We later got a quote which stated hundreds of pounds to get fixed which is a huge inconvenience when just moving house with costs etc. Also, on the day of moving, we had to sit outside the property for around 4 hours passed the time Northwood advised they would hand over the keys, in the street, in a van. Northwood also made me travel to York to collect as they would not drop these keys off to our new house as they claimed being short staffed on a Friday. The sale of the property was not so bad, but if you purchase a property from these guys, be sure to check everything out first. I have contacted them since in regards to the sound system and a blunt text back stated there was nothing they could do. No customer after care unfortunately.

Would give zero stars if possible the worst experience ever with this company very unprofessional ended up being stuck in a six month contract with them tiles in kitchen where a hazard and didnt get fixed washer broke again took three weeks for them to sort and i constantly had to ring and chase up the staff and put a complaint in after there contractor lied after doing the tiling job wrong and a shody job at that which the landlady wasnt happy with and they blamed us quick to take excessive amount of money but never contact you or sort problems you have been warned people!!

All the staff I've dealt with have been friendly and helpful, providing a great service.
This gave me confidence and trust in their professionalism, and this was repaid by how quickly they found me a tenant, and kept me in the loop along the way.
Good fee structure too - very competitive and fair.

I can't speak highly enough of Catrina and the Northwood team in York. Having used all their services (guaranteed rent, managed property and finally the sales) they made life incredibly easy. Living abroad and in a remote location would have made the process very stressful but Catrina managed every aspect of the move, communicated brilliantly and dealt with some complicated issues with a level of reasurrance that made the whole deal very straight forward.
I would not hesitate in using them in the future for any aspect of property management.

This agent was absolutely spot on. I had dealt with Catrina Merrigan when I was a landlord and of the few minor issues we had, these were dealt with very efficiently and quickly.
When I came to sell my property, Catrina went over and above the call of duty, found a buyer very quickly at the price I wanted for my property, kept me informed of all the developments as they occurred. There were no major issues at all. Absolutely first class service. I would recommend Catrina and the whole Northwood team to any prospective buyers/tenants.

I have let my property through Northwood from late 2010. They have always found excellent tenants who treated the property extremely well, and always ensured prompt payment of rent. I travel a lot, so I paid for a high level of service - dealing with issues as they arose, when they were not able to contact me. This was expensive, but a real boon for someone in my situation. Every time I needed help or advice they were always quick and gave good advice. I would happily use their services again.

Northwood in York looked after the renting of our property for a few years, and subsequently the sale of the house. In general we were very unhappy with the service they offered - frequently having to chase them up for information, waiting ages for people getting back to us and missing out on basic things you would expect a competent property management company to do. Not recommended.
