I'm quite new to buying at auctions but over the past few weeks have now purchased three items from John Pye (Nottingham). The transaction went smoothly and collection was a breeze. I've taken a chance on the condition of the items I've bought by not viewing in person but for the most part it has been so far so good. The 20% buyers premium and 20% VAT is not a hidden charge and stated clearly on the website so even a newbie like me could work it out. Also I've only purchased small (under £20 ) items which didn't really require a viewing but if buying larger viewing is obviously recommended. I've seen some negative reviews from people believing they've been ripped off but come on guys, use some common sense. When collecting the item I worked out for myself I needed to visit the sales office, even when having paid online, to collect my paperwork so that could have been made clearer on the website or invoice for newbies! Also I did buy one item (a child's toy) that had obviously broken front wheels not visible in the photo. It would have been nice if the listing had 'broken' in there somewhere but again it was my choice not to view the item in person so 'you takes your chances' as they say - plus I managed to repair it :)... Got stung in the car auctions, cars that arrive with keys, but that turn out to have engine faults, suddenly don't have keys anymore, they seem to get lost, and auctioned as "No keys" instead of "Engine fault" as you can get more money for a car that isn't advertised as "Engine fault". The 3 minute rule is a pure scam and not normal auction practice, just allows John Pye to run the bids up higher themselves using a computer. You cant see how many bidders there are or who you are bidding against, pure trickery. I have no proof, obviously, its just my experience, however i would bet on it. Also, be aware of any company that has to reply to every single one of the google reviews left by customers. Their replies and concern are just for show, to cover their backsides and make it seem like they care. Reputable businesses don't need to continuously sweep up the aftermath of disgruntled customers. Saying "please email us your concerns" is the modern way of saying "Go away, we don't care, we already have your money". Apart from those minor issues, its not a bad auction. Wait for it..."Dear Adam, we are sorry to hear you have a negative experience with us. Please email info@johnpye.co.uk with your invoice number and registered email address, so we can investigate further... This review is to warn other people like myself that are trying to earn an honest living. I do not want you to get ripped off as i did. Be careful with this "auction".... Read more

We recently appointed Knight Frank on the sale of our property in Bath and were delighted in the successful outcome. Sam Daniels at Knight Frank, Bath was the agent responsible for managing the sale and he was highly professional and diligent in dealing with all parties concerned through out. I would highly recommend Sam as a first point of contact to anyone considering the sale or purchase of a property in Bath. Gareth Stubbings... Read more

I have recently purchased a house 12 miles south of Bath through Knight Frank's Bath office. The viewings were arranged at short notice because we were coming a long way and the viewing staff could not have been more accommodating and were very well briefed. We had difficulties with our purchaser and Knight Frank were very helpful in keeping our vendor informed and on side. The brochure about the house we have bought was beautifully produced. Knight Frank acted most definitely in their client's interests but were very supportive of us as well.... Read more

Left the front door to my property unlocked TWICE after a viewing. Wouldn't recommend. If you can't trust them to lock and check a door, you can't trust them to sell your property.... Read more

I had to give one star because you can't give any less. Utterly dreadful experience dealing with these people from start to finish. Especially the lettings manager Kate Shipp. Arrogant, rude, and unpleasant. If you have a barge pole, don't go near them with it.... Read more

Hilton Smythe Commercial

Decided to use Hilton Smythe to help sell my parents business I inherited but had no interest in running. They kept me up to date through the whole process and had a really decent approach to advertising, which got lots of people interested in the shop. We agreed on a price that was fair and within just under 9 months they had sold it for me. I would like to thank them for their hard work and was only too happy to provide this feedback when they asked. I remember that Matthew was really helpful and there were others too, sorry can’t remember all.... Read more

Under no circumstances sell your business with Hilton Smythe. We made the unfortunate decision to sign a six month contract with them back in February this year to sell our shop. A valuer visited us and told us that if we paid so much upfront, they'd be no more fee's to pay and if the shop wasn't sold within six months we could simply pull it off the market or go with someone else. It was originally marketed and valued at £50,000. Initially we had a lot of interest and a sale looked likely. Then lockdown happened three weeks into the shop being advertised and all went quiet until late July, early August. Barely anything from Hilton Smythe. This we had expected due to the circumstances. In the meantime, the shop has been open and trading extremely well. Then come early August, we start being messed around by the agent. Suddenly and without any warning another agent has taken over and is arranging viewings with people who are not properly vetted. We're let down at the last minute by people who don't show up. We then reduce the price of our business in an effort to sell quicker, even then the agents kept calling with offer's well below the new asking price and when we turned them all down, we were made to feel like we're the ones being unreasonable and as though we should just accept any offer. Low and behold, we have decided to take our business off the market. Our contract ran out on August 2nd, therefore we are now out of contract. But... Hilton Smythe have stated that we have to give them six weeks notice for them to take our business off the market and in this time, we must accept viewings else we are liable for a fee of almost £3,000! We only received an actual copy of our contract, the day we gave Hilton Smythe our notice, which was two days ago. Yesterday, emails were flying back and forth between Myself and the agency over yet another no show. Hilton Smythe have become bullies and will stoop to any depths. They're not on the sellers side, the very people paying them and they will send anyone, unvetted, to waste your time on the promise of a sale. No matter how hard you try to get out of it, they will use 'the contract' against you. Do expect a level of stress that will drive you to the brink of a nervous breakdown and if you have a decent business, expect it to be adversely affected by bogus buyers phoning them and then you being forced into showing such people around! I urge anyone thinking of selling a business, go elsewhere. I wish I had seen some of these reviews back in February.... Read more
